Indy Bag -- sort of -- at the Gap

Post by Major Eaton »

I have a Mark VI & a Mark VII bag, which are great, but they just don't have the capacity that I need. The other day I bought a tan canvass messenger bag from The Gap. It's about 14" wide, 3.5 wide, and ~11.5 tall. The flap covers the entire front of the bag, but other than that, it's a pretty good likeness to the Mark VII. There is a front pocket and a small hanging pocket on the inside. There are no other fringes on the bag, except a strip of canvass running around the seam, which is good for support. It comes with a canvass strap. The metall rings that connect the strap to the bag are square and fit the WPG strap well. I think I paid about ~$24.

I realize Indy would never use anything with "The Gap" logo on it, but once I put on the leather strap from WPG, it looks good. You could very easily cut back the large front flap so it would resemble the Mark VII.

If you want an Indy-looking bag with some carrying capacity, I recommend it.

Bag pics

Here are some pics. In one I added the WPG bag as a point of reference. I may go buy another one and see if I can do some alterations to make it more like the Mark VII. The only thing I don't like so far is the large flap over the front (oh and the orange in the interior).

The last time I walked past the local GAP, they had dozens of these bags in tan and some in blue, black, and green (lime, not olive).

This is not a bad looking bag but that logo has got to go!
With patience you can get it for 8-10 bucks. The Gap starts marking down their stock fairly quickly.

Re: Logo

Agreed! The logo is some kind of transfer that can easily be rubbed off. The only other logo issue is a "Gap" button on the exterior pocket.

Good point about the pending 'sale.' I'll keep my eyes open. :!:

Maj Eaton, what was the original strap like? You say that's a WPG strap in the pics?

Strap

Post by Major Eaton »

The original strap was canvass and operated much like the WPG strap -- large loop on one end and connected to the ring on the other. Really, not bad looking. I had to cut it off.

The strap in the picture is from the WPG bag (or maybe a different strap I bought online, I can't remember now -- but they look pretty similar).

Oh, I was going to say I'd buy one just for the strap. It looks pretty good. I missed that you swapped it out. (that's not a WPG strap unless they've dramaticly improved sence I had one)

My bad

Post by Major Eaton »

Now, I'm pretty sure that it is NOT the WPG strap -- you're right. I found the WPG that came with the repo bag in a drawer. This one I bought on-line from....? But I got it within the past year and I'm sure I followed a link from indygear.

Sorry for the confusion.
