Are there any tips for fitting an AB?

Post by Hunter Jones »

I'm planning on ordering an AB soon and I was wondering if any of you had any tips on getting the best fit?

I don't know my hat size so I will only be giving the size in inches. Is there anything else I should be telling Steve?

Hunter

If you alredy have another Fedora with a good fit you can give him the measurements inside the hat . At the sweatband front to back and side to side.

Cheers,

Well, I took a tailor's tape measure and measured my head in centimeters. You start at the back and measure above the ears, accross your forehead. I came out with close to 58 CM, so that made me a 7 1/4.

I dont remember exactly, but I do believe there is a contraption that fits over one's head, and it actually takes an impression. I think someone mentioned that there was one in use at the hatters across the street from the HJ shop in London. Does anyone know more about this?

From what I understand, Steve now has a device for measuring the

head more accurately. :)

You are thinking of a device called a conformer.
It is used to get an exact measurement and shape of your head.

From the pics I've seen they look like something from "Back to the Future"!

Here's my experience with the fitting of an AB:

When I initially ordered my hat from Steve, I told him I wanted a size 7 5/8 size, with I believe a long oval (not sure). When I got it, I put it on and thought "Oh no, it's too big!". And it was, it was about .5-1 cm's too big. I wore it anyway, and within a week, it had shrunk down to EXACTLY my size. I had experienced PB's work, where it initially feels right on and then shrinks and expands wildly, but Steve's work has hardly shrunk or expanded at all since it shrank to my size.

Moral of the story: don't worry, Fedora will get your hat right! Just measure the length in cm's (because cm's are more precise), taking care not to pull too tight, guestimate what you think your head shape is, and tell Fedora. No problem. :junior: -IJ

Thanks for the tips. I have no idea what shape my head is (unless blockhead is a shape, haha), so I guess I'll just forward the measurments.

Another option is to go to a place that sells Stetsons (or any other brand) and jot down the size AND maker -- this can vary amongst makers (I was told that Italian sizes run big).

That way, if Fedora knows you take a 7 1/2 Stetson but, say, a 7 3/8 in some other brand, he can adapt yours accordingly.
