What if you got to measure his head! THAT would be cool.

Fedora: "How does this feel Mr. Ford?"
Ford: "Good, but please call me Harry."
Fedora (after nearly fainting): "Of course Harry."

This is very exciting, Steve and I wish you all the best!

I activated my account some time ago to check out the "member's only" sections at COW, but remained a lurker. The potential impact of this post on this forum (and beyond) finally convinced me to post a reply!

I suppose I'd better get my order in soon before you get buried...

Warm Regards from Washington's Olympic Peninsula!

Exactly. You may even want to say that it is 100% beaver and handmade, the old fashioned way, with antique hat maker's tools.
but according to what he said in an interview a couple of months ago, that is most likely doubtful. But...you never know.
What did he say?

Thanks for the advice on what to say on the note. I certainly am not gonna plug the hat, as I have never actively sought to provide the hat. With that said, I have had several folks from out west that seem to want to do that for me. So, I say, sure, I would love to be the one who makes his hat. But, I always leave it at that. If it gets in, it will not be because I am striving to do it.

Oh, I am told that when Ford is away from the cameras, he sometimes wears a hat, and a cap too. So, a hat from me as a gift, would not be something he would have no use for. I hope. Didn't he have a hat on when he flew the rescue mission a few years ago? A western hat, I think. Seems like I read that he did.

At any rate, I want to make sure the note is just a note whose essence is that of an Indy fan who thinks he should be wearing a handmade pure beaver hat, and a copy of the hat that started it all. Since the HJ no longer has this look, he may find it interesting and actually keep the hat!! regards, Fedora

Not that he doesn't already, but can you see the comments he'd get by walking around in that hat?

Well, I've heard him say in a few of the interviews for FireWall that he just recently started getting into computers. Maybe what you heard were from older interviews or something.

I don't see Ford as the type of guy that surfs the web. He's the type I see spending all his time outside and working with his hands. I wouldn't put it past him to try and see exactly where this hat came from though. I think the reason he probably appreciates good craftmanship is because of his experience working as a carpenter and I would think he would probably send Fedora a note back telling him as such.

I have seen Ford in baseball caps and sun glasses but it would be quite obvious and make total sense that he wouldn't want to wear anything that might attract attention to himself in public because of the resulting mob of fans he would create wherever he went.

I'd suggest that mentioning that you have been a professional carpenter, turned hatmaker would make an impact as well, Steve.

BINGO! From what I've been told and read over the years he seems to really appreciate good, hands on work.

Well, I've heard him say in a few of the interviews for FireWall that he just recently started getting into computers. Maybe what you heard were from older interviews or something.
No, it was a Firewall interview. He said he really doesn't mess with computers and that he really had no interest in them. I'm sure he most likely dabbles in them a bit but he seems old school like my dad. Just no real interest in them as he has for flying or just riding his horse. Still, he seems the type of guy who I wouldn't put it past him to lurk here if he were invited and had the spare time. Like I said, who really knows?

I think that he will like the gift Fedora. Congrats!

...As opposed to the majority of us that just said "I don't like this" or "I don't like that..." You did something about it other than complain and be satisfied with "good enough." You deserve every bit of praise you get. Like Peter, the fact that you listen to the fans makes the difference between your final product and other vendors. That is also your decision as you do not have to do so, and you would still sell hats. Don't sell yourself short.
Fedora wrote:Ah, excellent. I forgot he too used to work with wood. Thanks. Fedora
hmmm. Maybe you should make him a wooden fedora. Staples would not hold it on, so you could use thumbscrews. It will never taper or lose its shape...

Anyone remember the old Club Obi Wan and the spoof someone did of "What if Speilberg hired Indygear to be authenticity specialists"? It was like "lights, send in the gearheads to check everything". I think Schwammy wrote it. There was Fedora checking the hat and _ checking the jacket......oh well. too bad a lot of that got lost.

Steve, that's great news! You know everyone here will have their fingers crossed that it actually makes it to the screen as the "hero" hat. Just build it to your usual high standards and let it speak to your skill as a hatmaker. You can't lose, it will sell itself.

And if for some reason it doesn't (inside politics or "big bidness" dealmaking), just knowing that he has an AB will be enough. He will have become part of an exclusive group of wonderful people, all proud owners of the best handmade hat available!

And Mr. Ford, if you do lurk here, you know the rules -- PICTURES!

Cheers!

That would be the hat thread to end all hat threads, wouldn't it?

Fedora, I hope that you are subsequently asked to produce the hats for the new movie - that would really be something. Good luck with it all!

I have been reading what people have had to say about what should be in the note that goes with the hat, and the general theme seems to be a note giving the history of Advernturebilt and how it came about. Again big congrats Fedora :D

If I leave it for a week Harrison Ford himself might even subrscrive!!!!

Well Steve I'm so happy for you, I knew you would have arrived at a point like this... and, as I already told you long long time ago, it won't be hard for you to get a contract for a certain film in the hopefully not too far future.

I'm very happy for you and you know what? I'm not selling my ABs anymore

Oh yea, that was hilarious! Yes, I believe it was schwammy. I wonder if he would have a copy of it? I saved some of the musical but not that bit that he wrote. I thought I had but I can't find it. Of course we could always have another go at it since we have quite a few number of new faces.

Fedora this is really awesome, like u we all hope it gets to Ford. If he did in fact use it in the film, i guess i would finally have to buy one, before u start jacking the prices up! lol jk.

I agree with pitfall and others, u should definitely include some sort of small note with the hat explaining who its from and thanking him, or else he might just be like " what the heck?" . If he knows its from fans he might like it even more, and if he ends up really loving it, then he might tell them to use it for the films. Dont sell urself short, this is ur chance to really do something cool and possibley get our idol to use ur creation, I wish u luck!!! :D

Well guys and gals. I just got in info on Indy 4. I am picking and choosing excerpts from the email, so as not to get into trouble, but you may very well learn something new from what I am about to reveal. The bad news is, they already have the hat for the next film worked out. But, after reading what I have quoted below, you will be surprised, I think. Ok, lets see if I can do this without shooting my own leg off.

For your information for what is coming, and a heads up for you, here is
the data I've gotten by subject with suggestions for you, however, you are
the engineer on this project so the final thinking and execution is up to
you entirely, of course. Data on the fedora is the same for myself as
well as the gift itself. No different other than size, which follows in
detail below for now.

DATA ON HF:

Okay, according to Steve Nesbit and Deveora Lang, trainers and 2nd unit
folks on all three IJ projects, as well as The Fugutive as well as buddies
on and off set with Harrison, he still loves and cherishes IJ Raiders as
his all time favorite in the series, with IJ Crusade 2nd and Doom 3rd. He
had kept two of the Raiders hats as his own after production as well as
one of the jackets out of the 11 made for the first production. In the
late 80s early 90s he gave both Fedoras to the Mususem of Natural History
and the Smithsonian, both in Washington D.C., respectively.

However, he loves hats and early hats and wears them off and on and while
flying and around Jackson Hole while he resides there. At current, he has
no personal fedora. His exact size forthcoming for fitting sake.

DATA ON IJ4:

Talking to Deborah Nadoolman through my agent and through Amblin on
Tuesday afternoon, she; costume designer for all three IJ films and now
IJ4, and creator of HF outfit for final shooting for IJ Raiders, according
to her the script is portended for a complete retro for overall ambience
including costume and of course hat, to IJ Raiders. Not the other two
films. Thus, the Fedora will be of IJ Raiders styling and weathering as
well as overall fitting.

Lucas, Speilberg, and Ford all wanted to go retro for all overall story
and visuals on IJ4, back to IJ Raiders, with current FX applied where
needed, obviously.
SUGGESTIONS/Errata:

There is a scene in IJ Raiders, in the beginning, whereby an Inca idol
type is stolen from a cave area. As well, when IJ is in Cairo with Marion,
are both recommended hat style types that would go over well. For me, the
same.
The finished hat would be presented to HF personally at some point in
production, since the 12 being made for the movie usage (HF, stunts, 2nd
unit, reserve, etc) are being produced in house this time within costume
and prop departments.

HJ hat size is 7 1/4 but elongated. His head shape is a long oval
according to Deborah Nadoolman, costume designer for the films. The other
details, and suggestions for you are in the other mail I sent early today.
Okay, talked to Justin Story at 2 unit for ID4, told him the plan for
production on site presentation and he said as far as he knew there would
be 2 unit shooting in US as well as South America. I told him of the game
plan and he said since I have been on sets all over the place (see the
image section at Behold whereby the stills from the movies; Independence
Day, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, Alien 2, Jurassic Park 2,
etc, whereby I was on set in all of those and many others whereby I did
action scene workups on site, for ref.), there would be no problem getting
the hat to him. He'll love it, according to Deberoah. I'll arrange for
photos as well if possible if it is an onsite gig, which it would seem to
be most assuredly.
FOLLOWUP...............

I forgot, you need to inscribe and include the following in the HF Fedora.

"For Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones, always, from Steve Delt, AdventureBilt
Hats"................

Seperately, a note of what you do, your website URL, the other URL where
you and other folks/fans post, (where you told me to investigate), your
background and the reason for the gift to him as well as the reason you
are a hatter emcompassing the mark regarding IJ. Make it first person and
personal. One page should allow enough room. Movie sets are sometimes
very boring places between takes and shoots and thus if he gets this on
site, he'll have plenty of time to review it, read the note and relish the
hat, without being distracted.

HF is a very down to earth person and hands on and is in no way a
primadonna, and why so many directors/producers, desire to work with him.
He will take this gift to the heart and treasure it always. That you can
be assured.

So, I hope you guys enjoy the info above. And who knows, Perhaps he will like the AB so much, we will see it somewhere, at sometime. And, remember, you heard it here first!!!!

Sorry to hear that their doing the hat in house this time Fedora. :(

Did I read it right though that their going retro in style which ment their trying to match his look in Raiders, even the Cairo hat?

This has got to be one of the coolest things I've read in a long time and what a scoop! It's to bad someone can't include a challenge coin in with the hat but that might be pushing it.

Your head must be spinning right now. This still has to be an unbelievable experience for you. It would be nice to see photo's of Ford on the set recieving the AB too.

Yep, that would really make my decade!!! It makes perfectly good sense for the costumers to make the hat, if retroing back to Raiders is the plan.Everyone knows by now, HJ does not have the right block. My plan is to make him a hat that will blow the one he is wearing in the film completely out of the water!! Regards, Fedora

Congrats Steve- All this info is very exciting and agreat culmination of all your hard work that you obviously enjoy. Thru it all, though, I have to say (even though I`m sure it has been said before)that your unselfishness and genuine humblesness shines thru. I don`t get online much or parttake in too many of the discussions but my wife moans on how much I brag about the integrity and quality of the general community on this website Steve, I feel you represent it in it`s finest. Thank you for just being yourself and that 'self' being an all around GENUINE 'good ol boy'. I pray this small venture goes thru and Mr. Ford, at the very least, appreciates one heck of a fedora.

Not necessarily. I remember they already picked up a pair of boots for raiders but Harrison didn't like them (maybe they were uncomfortable) so he chose Alden and they became the shoes of the hero... something like that might hopefully happen also with your hat 8) 8)

Fantastic, Steve, this is great!

Not to change the subject, but this e-mail indicates that the hat at the Smithsonian is from Raiders. When I saw it a couple of years ago, I thought it looked more like the LC hat.

Ragingblues wrote:Steve, this information is very exciting to me on 3 levels:

1. The movie is absolutely, positively going to happen!

2. They are so specific about the costume and look being very Raiders! This what we all want, I believe.

3. If he gets your fedora very early on in the process, at the very least... the costume department will have the perfect hat to use as an example! If what they produce isn't close enough, you know he will show it to them.

Highest congrats on this opportunity, and the speediest of production time to you on this very important hat!

Can't say it better - excellent points. I also got a kick out of the information - albeit second-hand - as to which is HF's favorite movies - and ranked in order!

Even though their making the hats in house wouldn't it be plausible that once they saw the AB at the very least they coud endorse the hat in some way to let the general public know that if they want a high quality "Indy Hat" yours is the one to get?

I would also think if their trying to replicate the look from Raiders that your expertise might come in handy to someone in the costume department. Look at all the knowledge and hard work that's been put into the hat and all the research for the gear. This place is like an archive of everything they did in these films in regards to the gear.

I wonder if the jacket will be made in house too or will they go back to Peter for that?

Wouldn't it be cool if you and the AB along with this site were credited in some way at the end of the film. Maybe in regards to research.

No, that would be a nightmare for me. I am only one guy, and my hats will always be handmade, by just me. I could not handle it, and have no desire to do so. No big hat operation for me. I am too old to be worried with all of that. I am just an Indy fan who is hopefully lucky enough to give Ford my vision of the Raiders fedora. If we luck up and we actually get a pic of him wearing it, off set, you guys will be able to say that you own one exactly like his. Identical!! That will be a first. I will not have to worry about making anymore, because once this happens, the shop and website will close. I am serious. I never planned on doing this forever anyways, and that would be a good time to call it quits. Regards, Fedora

Wow, Steve. This is wonderful. So cool. And with regard to a point brought up above, I had previously thought that the hat at the Smithsonian was indeed a Raiders fedora. It may have been switched out since (as one Smithsonian pic. looked rather suspicious) but I could swear that the Smithsonian hat I saw was definitely Raiders with a VERY tight pinch in front.

But not the bleached out Raiders.

I saw it in Los Angeles at a travelling Smithsonian show.

I only bring this up because many it seems have been rather dismissive of the Smithsonian hat at other times.

But wow - Like everyone here I am way honored to be getting one of your hats. Can't wait. Again, wow. I REALLY love it when fans demonstrate to those runninig the show that we retain a very fresh sense of what gold they struck in the first place. Hopefully they will be fired up by your hat with the realization of having touched us all so much, beyond what $$$ they see at the box office, and the film will have that extra punch thanks to AB hats whether its on screen or not.

(I only wish they had gone retro with the Darth Vader mask and not given us that weird symmetrical thing in Sith).

You know, Steve - I already have dreams of getting your hat in the mail. How trippy is that?!

Amazing where the head finds refuge when crazy girlfriends are around (or not around, the nut).

And by the way, if you get a chance, was that dvd better than the tape you have? Not much different? It was never crystal clear but I get the sense that it didn't add much to things. ???

Enjoy your weekend!

If we luck up and we actually get a pic of him wearing it, off set, you guys will be able to say that you own one exactly like his. Identical!!
That would be something. Indiana Jones wearing your hat. Very groovy!

Even though their making the hats in house wouldn't it be plausible that once they saw the AB at the very least they coud endorse the hat in some way to let the general public know that if they want a high quality "Indy Hat" yours is the one to get?

Well, I understand but I think it would be nice to see your name and this site in the credits somehow.

I just hope I have the cash available before you finally close up shop for good. I'd hate to miss out on owning one of your hats.

You do realize though by saying this that you'll probably get a ton of rush orders from people thinking your retiring right now. :)

WOW!!!

Just try to make his AB look as good as I did mine.

In August, when I order a gray, don't make me bang on your door saying, "Remember me? Remember me?"
