Other RAIDERS fedoras : Belloq, Toht, Sallah

Post by agent5 »

I've often wondered who made the other hats from Raiders but have never, ever heard anything about it because most people are fixed on getting just the Indy hat.
DarthJones just posted in another thread indicating that Swales told him that HJ did not do the Toht fedora but no mention of any of the other characters.
We do know other hatters made hats for the film but I've never heard any concrete evidence as to what hats, who they went to and if they were even ever used at all.
I know Michaelson, Keppler and DarthJones have all been active in tracking stuff down from the beginning and I know some of the rest of you were too. So, did any of you ever find anything as to who may have made these hats?
We can see inside Belloqs hat and can make out some printing on the sweatband, but cannot make out what it says. Perhaps some screen grabs may halp some of the resident talent to spot who the maker may be.

So, this thread is all up in the air. If you have any solid info or just simple theories, please post them up.

Christies name was tossed around a lot when I talked to Swales and tried to get that info from him in my phone discussions, but he never would flat out say who else was involved providing in the other hats for the major players. A company man to the end.

In the new interview at Raider.net, she states that they went through a box of hats at Bermans, when looking for a hat for Ford. Perhaps, she bought some of the ones they had in stock for the other characters? Fedora

If they were from Bermans then that means they were rented costumes from Bermans stock. If it came from Bermans, most likely it was all rented stuff, then returned after the shoot.
Every once in a great while they sell off some of their older stuff, mostly to prop houses now who sell them for more then double what they paid but thats the deal with some of these places they have.
That's how I got my screen used nazi tunic. Rented for Raiders, then returned, then rented again for God knows how many other movies. Based on the tag in mine it's very probable it was rented for Last Crusade as well, then later sold to a prophouse and then to me. Same thing goes for my nazi cap. Even some of the original Star wars costumes were rented from Bermans. Some just got into private hands after all these years.
Wonder who has the hats in question now though? They may very well still have them at Bermans due to the film they came from, but also it's quite possible they're in the hands of private collectors. 25 years is a long time.
A company man to the end
You got that right. Even after they were tuning out @#$% hats for so long, he was still oh the salesman for them and about their involvement in the films.

Oh, hey gang! The Belloq hat is indeed a Herbert Johnson hat. It is a very pricey Monte Christi I think. I picked it up at Lucasfilm and looked at it. And I have seen it in one of the older HJ catalogs. But it was MANY hundreds of dollars as I recall.
