For the 'girthy' among you
Ive been reading a few threads about the measurements ( suit measurement vs. add a size, 80s fit vs. standard, etc). For the girthier elements among us- I have a 48 standard chest and a waist to match (unfortunately). While the waist is going, the chest will stay, as, even at my Army weight I still had the same chest mesurement. With the a 48 or fifty in the chest, will that accomodate the 'extra below' or should I just base it on chest size? ( or does this fall into the custom/jacket without a tag situation)
well from what i was told, if u have a bigger gut, or chest, you should try to add an extra inch to the from of the wested, especially the raiders, because it might lift in the front some and not look right. I ahve 46 (48 expanded) chest from lifting so i got the 48 and its good for me. Im not sure about the gut thing as much, but there are a few bigger guys in the forums. Hopefully one of them can help u.

Thats not a problem. While ive started to hit the gym 3 days a week, my chest will never get smaller, really, so Ill order for the size I need based on his recommendations.
Thanks!

Alathea,
I'm in the same boat as you! I haven't bother to take a chest measurement in a long time, but I'm pretty "tree trunk"-like, too. I'm broad-chested/wide-shouldered with or without my current gut. I have a 48 Raiders. It's perfect in the chest, a bit tight across the gut. But a couple months ago I dropped about five pounds (I was sick ) and it fit much better, even with such a slight difference.
If I were you I would not take the ole' "gas tank" into consideration when ordering your jacket. It sounds like you're taking off the weight, so you'll only regret a jacket for your current dimensions down the road. I would base it only on your other measurements. It may even help motivate your weight loss goals.

The chest on mine is tight 'military' fit. One thing I forgot to mention before.... Wested jackets are NOT tapered through the body. The design does not assume your waist is smaller than you chest. If you look at any photo of a Wested lying flat (there are PLENTY around here) it's just a "barrel" cut. That's the idea of the side straps, to cinch in the waist for a custom fit.
Also, my current Raiders has no special measurements. It's an off-the-rack 48. I got it on ebay through one of Wested's auctions and it fits as well if not better than any other Wested I've owned (this one is #5 for me). If you can wear off the rack, Wested's auctions are actually the better route for larger sizes. On ebay the jakcets are flat priced for sizes 38 thru 48 (around $240.00) where as if you order through the site, anything over a size 46 is like $30.00 extra. The only thing is, I believe all the ebay jackets are goat but the goat is AWESOME! It's just as light as the lamb, has pretty much the same look and takes on creases much faster. And, of course, it's tougher.
Hope that helps!

This is one of those posts that one really doesn't to respond to readily, as one does not want to admit 'girth'....but if you're specifically talking about the old 'spare tire' or furniture syndrone (chest has fallen into the drawers)......I can reply to that.
I wear a standard 42R with 25 inch sleeves. When I find myself suffering from the 'girth' in the mid section, I've found that simply moving UP one size, 44R, with 25 inch sleeves has answered that problem, and has not increased the area around the chest measurement all that much. That extra width is usually lost in the action pleat anyhow.
The BEST answer, though, it to just lose that extra belt tightening weight and go BACK to 42R......
Anyway, I've found that the easiest and quickest way to take care of this adjustment.
Regards! Michaelson

Well, I'm not quite as 'girthy' as I was in December, and I will be even less so by summer. Anyway, I don't expect my chest to change much. I'm a 44, but 5'-8" and 190 lbs. I ordered a 44 from Wested (Temple Of Doom) in Authentic Lambskin, cut to my measurements. It swallowed me whole. I sent it back, and with several emails we decided to try what amounted to a 42 Short, which worked. Definitely go by the chest, because there is a lot of extra room on the sides to handle your waist and hips. As you lose weight, you just take up the side tabs. You really grow to love these little coats. I also have an A2 flight jacket and a leather version of the M65 field jacket. The Wested is so incredibly soft that I feel it's a little on the delicate side. Sometimes I wish I had ordered the distressed cowhide. Having a flight jacket with cotton liner, I chose the acetate liner for the Wested. It's not as warm-feeling in cold weather, but it sure slips on easy. Unfortunately, the slick acetate also allows it to hang off the shoulders when not zipped up. I guess the cotton-lined body and acetate sleeves is the best bet. Generally speaking, I have found every leather coat I have bought to be oversized. I believe this is done so sweaters or other heavy garments can be worn under them. I expected Wested to make my jacket to fit without heavy undergarments because after all, it's an Indy jacket, but such was not the case. If I didn't know any better, I'd say the coat he sent was at least a 48. Even the 42 I kept easily overlaps at the zipper. I also don't like the left-hand zipper. Because of the things I don't like about it, I just tried a G-8 flight jacket from U.S. Wings, thinking about possibly replacing the Indy. NOT! It's already on the way back. Go to their site and look at it - it was the U.S. flight jacket in the early '30s, and could have been the inspiration for the Indy jacket; not exactly, but similar. Anyway, I learned from the Indy jacket mess, so I ordered a 42. Again, it swallowed me. I was going to exchange it for a 40, but put it on again and definitely didn't like the look. Nice coat, but you need to be taller to make it work. So, I'm getting a refund. BTW, I also tried their distressed Indy jacket, and it fit the same way. I'm glad I have the Wested. It may not be perfect, but it's #### good enough.

G8
There was no such prewar leather jacket as a G8. The only jacket to bear this designation is the postwar WEP or Cold Weather Suit jacket whcih is in cloth.
Avirex first made up the leather G8, pretended it was a prewar design and others (oh, irony!) have copied it.

Maybe Avirex made up the G-8 designation for marketing purposes. Perhaps the original designation was Type 440. By the way, Avirex became 'Cockpit' and is part of U.S. Wings.
