Forgive me if this has been mentioned before, but I was with a couple of friends having lunch at the Olive Garden yesterday and a thought occured to me: What the heck do I do with my hat?!? I was brought up never to wear your hat at a dinner table, or indoors for that matter. But I was thinking, "Is it ok to wear your hat while waiting for the table?" "What about walking to the table?" Once we sat down, I had no place to put my hat but on the floor. What are guys (and gals) like us do when it comes to the fedora?

PS: I think we should make this topic a sticky for future reference.

I rarely wear my hat into a restaurant. Like you said its hard to find a place to put it and I won't eat with my hat on. If I do though I usually take my hat off and stick it on my knee.

Indeed I wear it on my knee... if it is a fancy or vintage style resurant they may have hat pegs on the wall... if I remember correctly, I beleive its not proper fedora Etiquette to wear the hat indoors at all... so if you're waiting for a table outside its okay but if you are inside the building, the "proper" thing to do would be to take it off. I fudge a little on these rules from time to time (actually whenever I can get away with it) but so did Indy - He didnt take his fedora off at Donovan's party until a few minutes after donovan comes in the room...

For me it depends. If there are two or three of us, it goes on the unused 4th seat. If I'm in a situation where I can't leave it in the vehicle I came in, it goes crown down under my chair on the floor. If the floor looks 'suspect', a napkin goes on the floor first, then the hat crown down.

If at a counter, edequette allows for the wearing of the hat rather than removal.

Haven't had any problems so far all these years.

Per my private message, eh Michaelson ? As you said, it is ok at the counter. My rule is to wear it in areas that are mine, ie my house, my truck, ect. If with a mostly male crowd, I wear it indoors and at the table. When I go to church, I leave it in the car.

As always, follow my philosophy: just do what's right for you, and screw everybody else    :junior:

No, as I told you in my reply, it was one I was well aware of, but thank you for the reminder.

I always take my hat off in a restaurant, but sometimes it's hard to find a place for the hat. Usually, there is an empty chair and I place it there upside down. But then, so I don't forget the hat, I'll put my car keys in it...KC

I either put it on a chair, if no chair, on my lap or my knee, if it doesn't fit there, I put it on the floor, under my chair.

Often when at dinner with my group, we ask for a booth, where there is usually limited hat space, but if there is nobody at the booth behind me, I will perch the fedora on the top of the bench.

My two cents.

Post by johnnycanuck »

New here, fist post, but I just want to add my two cents worth here. In a restaurant I usually keep my lid on till I get to my seat. If there is space I put it on a spare seat, if not (and its not too muddy out) I place it under my chair. As a general rule public areas I keep my hat on intimate settings I take it off. Department store - on. Mom and pop shop - off. A good guide is John Steed on the Avengers. If he did it, its probably by the book.
