SHIRT FIT

Hi guys, I am new here. Sorry if this has been discussed before but in Raiders and also all 3 films the shirt appears to be a slim fit. I would like to ask the Wested and WPG shirt owners how's the fit of their shirts.

Slim or baggy?

To quote WPG website "Due to the worldwide success of McDonald's and other purveyors of gravity-inducing foods, all my shirts are made with a full body."

How's that?

Hello Platon and welcome on board. Your question is quite unanswerable if you don't tell us your measures :lol: we are not all the same you know? :P . I bought a Wested Medium and it's slightly baggy for me but for someone else might be fitting.

The recent solution is the Magnoli shirt. It's taylored on your specs. Have a look around, there are many reviews. :wink:

Anyone who can look at the above pic of the Magnoli shirt will that it is not accurate.

Well I consider sending one of my shirts to Wested hoping that they will be able to take measurements from it. Do you think they they would do it? or sizes are S, M, L, XL and that's it?

Wested has only S M L etc sizes unfortunately. Not taylored. Anyway I own a Medium, if you want I can send you the details of the Wested Medium shirt to compare with your shirts :wink:

About the magnoli shirt I think some little details have still to be changed a bit to make it more screen accurate but if you ask him he will alterate the shirt in every detail you want on your request for free. Am I right Magnoli?

PLATON, what about the Magnoli shirt do you not consider to be screen accurate? As I recall, Magnoli did a lot of research and asked many opinions to make his shirt as screen accurate as possible. Still, it's the only shirt that I am aware of that is 100% custom tailored.

that the pleats above and below the pockets are sewn on the shirt with 4 sewings. (The outer sides are sewn also)

The accurate thing has only 2 sewings (in the middleof the pleat) so that the outer sides can fly freely. This you can see in the pic below

Well I asked Magnoli if he could make them with only 2 sewings and it said it's not a problem. The price is the same.
I don't know why he chose to use 4 sewings... anyway he would make them as you prefer with no overprice :wink:

I'll get you the measures very soon my friend. Wanna know them in centimeters or inches?

Measures of the wested shirt (medium):

the back (from sleeve to sleve seam) is 51cm (20")
shoulder 18.5 cm (7.28")
sleeves 63 cm (24.8")
collar is about 42 cm around the neck (16.53")
the front (from sleeve to sleeve across the chest) is about 48cm (18.9")
61 cm (24") from arm pit to arm pit on the front, approximately the same on the back.
I hope my measures are enough for you, compare them with your shirt... consider also that i'm not a taylor. :wink:

Don't let anyone fool you. ALL the shirts are gunna be too baggy except the Magnoli cuz' you can custom order it to your size. Only problem with the Magnoli is that it's not made from the same material as the original, but overal, most people don't care about that. They just want a good, quality shirt that looks like the one from the film and according to reveiws, that's exactly what you get.
The Noel Howard shirts are also too baggy but they look to be made from the same material as the shirts from the film.

Out of all the shirts I've seen reviewed the Noel Howard is still my favorite. I've had mine taken in so it's quite a bit tighter fitting than when I got it. However, the Magnoli is the most popular offering around here lately and with good reason it seems. Out of all the choices you have today, I'd say the Magnoli is the best.

One question about the fabric material, what's the weight of it?

I darted my LL Bean shirt down the back to acheive a tighter fit and that worked quite well, I will do the same with my Wested someday when I get the chance to get down too it, and if anyone would like the specs of my Wested Small, let me know...

It would be nice if you could list your specs on the small... infact anyone with a small, large, xl that could list specs would probably be helpful to someone on this forum...

I think Canyon and Indiana Ken have a Wested Small.

Everything looks OK except the "from arm pit to arm pit" measuring 61cm. I need that to be around 50cm.

Can you pls look at the pic below and tell me if this is the dimension you are referring to?

Yes that's it. Remember that it's not your chest measure but the shirt measure. They are usually larger than your chest anyway (although for me it's too big anyway).

The only solution is a modified Magnoli shirt if you want a perfectly fitting one :wink:

I would suggest you have any shirt you buy taylored to fit better. We are of all shapes and sizes and a standard S, M, L, XL just doesn't work. Besides...every company's size structure is different. There is no "standard" here in the US for clothes sizing.

Why would you do that? Wested doesn't use the correct material either.

This directly from the main site: According to Noel, the shirts are made from 100% superior "mercerized" Swiss Cotton, yet it feels like a blend of cotton & polyester.

My guess would be that "100% superior "mercerized" Swiss Cotton" doesn't exist, or it's hard to find, or it's too expensive.

So, if I understand correctly we have at the moment 3 shirt makers

1. Wested
2. What Price Glory
3. Magnoli

Forget the style and fit. Let's talk fabric.

agent5 - Thanks for exposing my ignorance. :lol: I had looked at IndyGear somewhat recently but missed the fabric notation.

And PLATON, I found the above fabric for about $6 a yard here:

Something I've been mulling over, perhaps buying my own fabric, heavy enough for a rugged outdoor shirt, and sending it Indy Magnoli for a shirt. I think I'd come out about even in cost.

It does exist because I have 3 shirts made from it.
I doubt it'd be hard to find for an experienced costumer.
Expensive? Dunno. But NH sold them like mad, even though they were more expensive than any of the current offerings.

I own 5 NH shirts and they look terrific. I used Dalexs re-dye procedure and added a smidgeon more gray dye.

Even after many washings, they still do not feel as comfortable as I would have hoped. They feel kind of plastic-like. I have 100% cotton shirts that are far softer.

Agent 5, I am not sure how you feel about this, but I feel that I could rip the NH shirt in half rather easily. Maybe not, but it feels that way.

i sent my WPG back and forth 3 times trying to get the right fit. First i got a 17x 33, but the sleeves were about 4 inches short, it could ahve been a mistake, but the shirt itself seemed to fit nicely, maybe a bit too tight. So i got an 18x36, the sleeves were the right lenght, but then the shirt was HUGE. So finally i sent that back again and ordered a 17x36. I just got it today, and its alot better than the 18x36 but its still pretty baggy. I have 2 A&F muscle type shirts in XXL that fit very tightly, i wish my WPG was like them. I'm gonan tell my mom to do her worst in trying to shrink this baby, and then if i need ill maybe get it tailored or have my mom sew the back tigheter. I mean i have normal fitting shirts that arent even this baggy. I guess for any bigger guys the shirts perfect, but i wish i had a nicer fitting MAG. :cry:

Of course. One for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I intitially ordered 2 of them, but after NH announced he was going out of business, I ordered 3 more and a pair of pants. It was now or never. Two of the shirts are still in the package.

I love the way they look. They fit tighter than most of my shirts. When I am in shape, the shirts accentuate that. I have pictures somewhere, but since I took my old website down, they are not available. I can repost if you like...? That way you can see what I mean.

The sleeves are tighter than other shirts too. I can barely roll the sleeves up. This is a positive feature though!

I do not feel that they are the strongest shirts around, but part of that may be from the dye remover and redying job. AS far as I am concerned, they give the best movie look. Not to knock others, but this fabric really seems to hold the wrinkles and look Raider-ish. For me it is not about the details of the shirt, but in the way it looks worn.

It never will look like Indy gear if it is brand new, but that is for another thread.

I'm pretty sure the current shirt offerings are thicker than the NH shirts. Yes, they do feel like you can just tear them, but they are a thinner weight. Most likely due to Ford having to wear a jacket over them in 120+dg heat. Remember, the original costume was just that----a costume. It was gauged for a reason and that was then carried over into the public market when he made them. It wasn't MADE to be rugged. It was made to be worn in several scenes for a movie, then disregarded. I think of my NH shirt as more of a working costume piece than an everyday wearable shirt, which it still is and has been for years for some members with great results. Just ask Schwammy :wink:
I think the offerings today were made with the publics admiration for a durable, long lasting shirt already as part of the drawing plans when they were conceived. So, I think if you are really looking for a rugged, everyday shirt, maybe the NH isn't for you. But whatever is out there now looks to be fine for that purpose.

The way it looks now, I'd go with Magnoli. You'll get a quality shirt (so I've heard) and it'll be tailored to your exact size. If you want it baggy like the rest, you can do that. If you want it slimmer fitting like the Raiders shirt, you can do that too.
I can't vouch for Magnoli's fabric as I haven't seen it in person, but I know it's not what was used in the film. Even still, they all look nice. If I just came into collecting gear now, his would be the shirt I'd get. The others are nice, but are too baggy and also have a few design elements off.

I just looked into it and the "mercerized" is simply a process applied to cloth, and, apparently, the cotton I used is mercerized. So you can apply that term to the type of cotton I'm using. In any case, I'm going to try and source this exact "swiss cotton" and see what I can turn up. I'll keep you all posted.

I love this feature!!!!

I just wanted to say that it's really great that Magnoli is around and reading this stuff. I am going to order the Magnoli shirt definately. (In most colors available).

I just did a quick google search on "mercerized Swiss Cotton" and it seems to be used in frilly ladies underware quite a lot. :lol:
