How does Indy wear his gas mask bag?

Post by Kodiak »

Just wondered. I'm getting ready to take some pics now that I have my fedora and I wanted to get it right.

In theory, wearing your bag so that the slider buckle part of the strap is on your chest should cause the bag to be on your left side.

Screen accurate left side, if you are left handed you would probably want to reverse it.

Unfortunately that theory dosen't work with me because I'm using a vintage WWII courier bag. It has a canvas rather than leather strap. I'm debating whether or not to spend the money and buy a "real" Indy repro or stick with the one I have.

Though I'm left handed, I think it's easier to get into from the left. I just wondered so that I could get accurate on the shot.

Indy was right handed, so he wore his gun holster on the right side. That means that he would wear his bag on the left side so as not to interfere with drawing his weapon. Of course, he could only draw his weapon if he had a pencil and paper in his bag. #-o

How does the bag hang?

I'm sorry that's a private matter. One I only discuss with my doctor and wife.

Well....

Here's the thing. When I originally glanced at the title to this thread I thought I saw the word "YOUR" in with it. I was like, "What in the world is going on in here!"

Just changed the title to try to remove nasty thoughts, Michaelson.

I don't carry a pistol (court order), so I wear my MKVII on my right, and under the jacket on a hot day (then I can remove the jacket without much entanglement), and over my overcoat in the winter so I don't look like I have a hip deformation.

Though Indy wore it consistently on his left and under his jacket - no real need to vote.

Yes, good move, Kodiak. Thanks for stepping up.

Re: the poll, though, I have to agree w/ Snake - fully documented, if you want to be screen-accurate. (For a real mind-bender, figure out how he could have gotten it hooked over that gun turret from that config!)

But if you are looking for how WOULD you wear it, that's different. Yeah, I might go over the jacket, but after trying it the Indy way, I admit, it's got lots of advantages. The only disadvantage is trying to get it off by itself, but if you accept that you WOULDN'T part with it, then no prob, go the Indy Way: under jacket, right shoulder to left hip.

The best thing about my bag is that I can unhook the strap from the bag using an interesting little metal carabiner-type thing. When I get tangled, just unclip and remove.

Personally, I wear my bag on the left (even though I'm left-handed I shoot with my right, and yes I do shoot real guns fairly regularly) but it depends on the situation whether I wear it over or under the jacket.

As I said, I just wanted to make sure I do my pics right.

Why is it that the bag looks bigger in this pic? I've never seen this shot before.

Image

I put mine on the left but for some reason it feels like it fits better if I have it on the right side of me, but.....If I do that then it covers up the holster.

Ugh, why does life have to be so complicated. ;)

I like it better on the left anyway for some reason, I also like to wear a little behind on the left... it does look huge in that picture and several others that I've seen, makes me wonder if they had different sized bags... I think it is just the camera angle and position though...

There are a couple of these "huge Mk VII" pics. Looks like the bag is worn with the back facing outwards (strap is turned the right way though - buckle is where it should be). The flap isn't closed - it's bulging up a bit, thus giving the bag a bigger appearance...

That, or we must assume that Harrison's height is greatly exaggerated on IMDB...

Maybe they had a bigger bag but decided not to use it so they re-shot certain scenes with a smaller one?

Strange....

Good point Jerry.
Answer: it is impossible. Bad script error.
