The Raiders ULTRA THICK sweatband. FOUND!-The Lost Stitch!
My Borsalino's sweatband is about 1mm thick. I pumped it up to about 5mm thick (3/16 inch) with layers of masking tape.
It goes inside my home blocked 360 stovepipe Borsalino. I've cut the band down to 3/4 inch.
Now my hat looks like the Raiders hat.
Besides being like the Raiders hat, the thick sweat allows that CHANNEL under the ribbon in front bash to EXIST, by holding the crown away from the forehead.
Here's the hat with the thick sweat, channel, and me wearing it on my head normally.-
The channel in my hat is caused by a stitch that makes a pleat in the felt of the crown. I have been looking for this stitch in Raiders for years, but it has eluded me. But yesterday I found it, in the "Trust me.." scene in the Raven bar. The white dash with the black dot above it.
(My stitch is under the ribbon.) ... I have seen vintage hats with 2 inch sweats. Maybe it had one of those folded twice? Evidence of the thick sweat isn't clear untill the Tunisia scenes, when the hat shrinks or distorts in the heat. Therefore I am making my block larger. And, I think the Raiders sweat was even slightly thicker than this one.

...so maybe the line showing at the outside of the ribbon is the tape rather than the sweatband...
@Steve: we could add some Cool Max synthetic sweatband behind the leather sweatbands to archive this look, without cutting down the sweatband to 3/4" and then pull the "excrementum" out of the ribbon..
Regards,
Marc

Good show 3M$ !!!! You have found the Rosetta stone, I think. And, what I like about it, is that this is perfectly reasonable.
Yeah, but man, it is hard to nail the customers hat size when you throw in these other variables!!! That is, the customer wears a hat that is 22 1/2 inches, and then I have to make it bigger(but how much bigger) to allow for the cinched ribbon, and shims behind the sweat!!!
Truth is, when I do a Cairo hat, I cinch the heck out of the ribbon, which sometimes crinkles up the sweat(thereby changing the actual hat size), and most times I can pull this off. I just do not know if I could add the shims and still make the hat fit.
A couple of times on a hat that was sent back due to it being too tight, I just loosened up the overly tight ribbon, and the hat fit!!! regards, Fedora
