ironing the brim? (updated with pics)
Nathaniels website has a image gallery on hat-making procedure. What does ironing the brim do? I thought that might hurt the felt

Felt hats are made, using steam, heat, and pressure. So, no problem with the brim ironing. All hats are ironed, the crown and the brim. The key is not to scorch the felt. In the old days, when the irons were heated on a wood stove, or a gas eye, it was easy to get the hat irons too hot. Nowadays with the modern electric irons, you can control this easier. So, iron away!! If you are not gonna pounce the hat, after ironing, you will need to use a piece of cloth between the brim and the iron to keep it from getting shiny. Fedora

If there's any stiffner left in the felt, and you have a steam iron...the answer is yes, it will help stiffen it again as the warm moisture will reactivate any stiffiner left.
I use the 'wool' setting on my iron, and as posted above, I use a cotton cloth between the iron and the brim.
Regards! Michaelson

Ironed my brim just now on wool setting with cotton cloth barier, as per Michaelson. Will post pictures from work tomorrow. My server there is superfast, while the home connection seems to be run by hamster power.

Here are a few pics of my Akubra fed after a little ironing and shaping. The brim stiffened quite nicely.

Yes, I think my hat most looks like Last Crusade style. The lamp shade is ToD.

considering I really haven't a clue what I am doing, I was pleased with the outcome.
