Raven Bar Scene

Post by MARQ »

We had these 20 degrees below Celsius-days, C-O-L-D, Freezing days and I was thinking about the Raven Bar scene....if George and Steven had done their homework, they would´ve dressed the cuy differently for it ! I mean, I have some cold weather experience with the Raiders-jacket and it wasn´t that warm!! Even the boots aren´t heavily lined, warm?- NOT! So, speaking of the era in mind (1930-40´s) what kind of gear would mr Jones really wear in that scene and further more, how he would´ve arrived on the spot: walked, driven a truck ,horseback-riding ...what? Anybody!?

The first thought that comes to mind about possible cold weather gear is pointing me toward military cold weather outer garments, i.e. army coats and heavily lined pilot jackets, like in Memphis Belle.

As to how he arrived at the bar... I'm thinking he may've rented a horse or mule, considering how much money he had on him at the time.

My assumption is Indy did not intend to be in Nepal for very long. A day or two at most. Find Abner, get the headpiece, and hop on a plane.
It is possible he did have a heavier jacket but did not wear it into the bar..

According to the novelization, he got to the bar by car, and left his equipment inside when he went in the bar. I believe his heavier coat would have been left there, along with his bag and suitcase.

And, he probably learned from personal experience to bring along his jarnagan to wear under his jacket, as we saw in "Mystery of the Blues."

Im big on the idea that he would be wearing an undershirt, just because he didnt wear one in Cairo dosent mean that he would never wear one!

Of course im a freak who loves cold weather so the idea of wearing my wested, shirt and an undershirt in 20 degree weather dosent sound that bad!

Great movie, another one I've grown up with, I've been looking for a cheap Ebay Bomber jacket for a while now. I have yet to find one that caught my fancy but these jackets would have indeed been significantly more suited to keep out the cold and the wind, while retaining a very Indy look and remaining accurate for the time period.

Going off what Michaelson said was in the monetization<--- Crazy dyslexia for Novilization---, he arrived by a car borrowed from an apparently grateful friend of his in Nepal. The novel is a fun read and answers some of those questions you have, You can usually pick up cheap used copies of the Campbell Black Raiders novelization from amazon.com. I’d recommend it!

....yeah, like...'Hey, I'm cold...where's my coat?"

You suddenly realize that looking 'cool' and BEING 'cool' are two completely different things!

They didn't give him a heavy coat because I think the filmmakers wanted to reinforce "the look" and the idea that Indy pretty much wears the same clothes all the time whether in jungle, desert, or icy locales. I think they were careful not to mess with his silhouette. Remember Marion recognized him from his shadow alone. They also probably didn't want him in a heavier coat because of the action to follow. What could he have worn? I could see him wearing a 3/4 length leather or heavy canvas jacket maybe with a fur collar or fur lined hood hanging down in back and his trusty Wested underneath it. I could easily seem him in a winter coat like the ones the early polar explorers used to wear.

I you ever get to watch the original horror classic 'The Thing', that's exactly how the principals dressed.....standard A-2 jackets underneath parkas. When they were inside, the parkas came off, but the leather jackets remained in place.

The first (Parkas over A2) because it was cool, the second (leather jacket remained) because they were "cool", right?

Also, If one of the resident Canucks can interject....

It's all in what you are used to. I find that if it's not windy, my Wested is enough for about minus 15 to 20 degrees celsius, and if it is windy--well I just get cold in about 10 minutes :)

But to go from a plane to a car to a bar to a car to a plane, a wested would be plenty.

I wear my Wested daily, and though we have had a warmer then usual winter, even on the really cold days I am fine.

Cheers

Michaelson hit the spot there! That´s what I was driving for, since it wouldn´t have interfiered the movie itself at all, it would´ve been just natural to show him dressed with thick parka, but it´s that moviemagic you know...."anything goes", you gotta love it!
I must add that I had a wery thick sweater under the Wested. I was comfortable for about half an hour or so, then I began feel a little cold(ish) SO, there ,see!
Thank´s Michaelson!!

Well, Spider-Man wears the same outfit year-round, so you'd think he'd freeze in New York winters, too.

Heroes are made of sterner stuff than the rest of us. I just accept that.

Indy must have wisened up after a while since by the early 1950's, in MOTB from the Young Indy Chronicles, he's got a nice cardigan underneath the Wested, along with gloves AND a scarf. Musta been flu season... 8)

Indy's Winter Gear

Post by Capt_Zak »

Indy had to wear his "standard" clothing in the bar scene. Imagine how the fight would have looked if he was all bundled up like Randy in "A Christmas Story"? LOL

He would have been pushed over and just laid there like a slug. :D

I got the impression that Indy would most likely have an all weather trenchcoat left over from the Belgian army. In the original film 'Highlander', McCleod wears an old A-2 with a trenchcoat over it most of the time. At the final duel; he leaves the large coat behind. regards, hanson.

You got any good pics of the Connor A2? I've been wanting a good excuse to get one from Peter. :)

Ditto that. I even wear only my Adventurebilt 'til it gets to minus 30 C or so. -20 is nothing. I wear the same leather jacket (and lately the mock A2) in summer when it gets to be plus 28 or so, and wear the same jacket in the winter - though colder than -18 or 20 and I'll throw a raincot over top.

I can't remember the title of the movie, but it was shot in the 30's and starred Cary Grant as an angel. In one scene, there was a guy ice skating in the background dressed pretty much in Indygear. People were way tougher and less whiney back then and Indy was probably tougher than most.

Noticed the other night when watching 'The Last Cruisade' that Indy is wearing a very generous and thick looking overcoat in the scene where he boards the Zepplin (German Blimp) with his dad and he actually wears it until he changes into the waiter/stuard jacket. It's dark blue or black and has a military look to it.
