Post by Texas Raider »

Here are a couple of pics of hat ribbons from Fedora and Marc(same 'THE' ribbon) and an Akubra regular Federation ribbon for comparison. I had a few more , but I couldn't post 'em because Imageshack said they were too big :? and I don't know how to resize images.

The ribbons are - TOP- Fedoras gun-metal grey
HIGHMID- Marcs(and Fedoras) "THE" vintage ribbon(AB Deluxe)
LOWMID-Fedoras brown vintage ribbon
Bottom- Akubra regular Federation ribbon

That is a nice comparison. I really like when people take the time to do such, as it's a gain for all of us. Thank you Tex.

The vintage ribbon that Steve had was EXTREMELY close to black, appearing black in pretty much any light conditions, unless you put something REAL black next to it. Quality wise this ribbon beats all, hands down. What a pity that it isn't available any longer plus the missing millimeter :(

The re-discovered Raiders ribbon is hard to take a picture of, isn't it? - I've found it to be so at least, since it's constantly appearing in a slightly different brown, sometimes even black, depending on the light conditions. I guess that's why we had so many discussions about the original ribbon being brown or black some years ago

No problem

Question Marc, what do you mean specifically by 'best quality'? Judging from handling all of these ribbons, the one you are offering now is AWESOME! Just the weight alone demonstrates to me the quality of it. It is way heavier than the others. Only the gun metal grey compares to it in this category. Fedoras vintage is slightly lighter and the Akubra ribbon is a wispy feather compared to these others.

I like the vintage due to the fineness of the ribs. The modern stuff has courser ribs. Also, the vintage ribbon used rayon made from wood products, while modern stuff uses synthetics somehow in the production of the rayon. Generally speaking, the rayon/cotton ribbons are more flexible from the vintage era, due to the makeup of the rayon. I also like the edging on the vintage ribbon, or on that particular 50-7005 pattern. The vintage ribbon pictured there is made by Schiff, and all modern ribbon from them carries the 705 pattern, that is a courser ribbed ribbon, and quite stiff comparably. regards, Fedora

We'll leave this one up for discussion, then if everyone agrees, I'll move this to the archive. This is one we don't want to lose.

GREAT job, TR!!! :D

Great post Tex!

Ribbons are really hard to photo. Heck, they even seem to change color in different light. The ribbon on my AB (from March 05. I'm not sure if its the vintage or not) looks just as light as the felt in some light; sometimes a bit purple. Then at other times it looks takes on a dark "coffee" color.

Sounds like the modern stuff I used for a while before I got the vintage. Fedora

Steve answered the question already :)

The re-discovered ribbon that Steve and I use on our hats is a really good ribbon, period! It fits to the quality hats HJ made back then and has a lot finer structure then the modern 705 patterns from Schiff, but the vintage has SO dense lines plus the wood based rayon... it's just something special. - Not 100.00% screen accurate, but special

Somebody could scan the ribbons to get a pretty good lightning.

...and still you'd get the colors in artificial lightning conditions, which is different to direct sunlight (don't ask why, I can't explain it)...

Thanks for the kudos, guys!

So just to clarify, and make sure I'm not confused  - the vintage brown ribbon pictured (Fedoras, not the newly discovered ribbon) IS the 705 (7005?)pattern? and IS the stiffer ribbon, or do I have this backwards/confused?

Also, which is more preferred,as far as hat afficionados go, the courser ribbing like on the newly discovered? Or the finer pattern like the vintage(both grey and brown)? I kind of think the vintage ribbons look like small sqare patterns, and the newly discovered looks obviously ribbed.

Personally, looking at them with the hat, and up close, I like the courser pattern of the newly discovered ribbon. You really have to see this ribbon in person, it's impressive! Both of Fedoras ribbons are WAY awesome, too, but that AB deluxe ribbon is in a league of it's own. (IMO)

Thanks for getting it to me Fedora!/Marc!

The vintage ribbon is the 7005 and more flexible.

Wheather it's more desirable or not... I would say it's personal preference, to be honest. For the Raiders fan - of course - there can only be one and that's the ribbon used in the movie. For the vintage oriented hat fan a vintage ribbon would clearly have a bigger value.

The 705 pattern is yet coarsen then the ribbon you have there and THAN it really starts to look crappy (like a seating belt... :? ).

Marc, you have a way with words. That is a very accurate description. You order Schiff ribbon, hatband grade, and they send out that stuff.(705) Thanks goodness for you Marc, and sourcing that Hj ribbon. As we both know, you cannot buy stock ribbon here that is fine enough, or the right color. Fedora
