Ah, that "new jacket" smell ...

Finally got the knock on my door today from the postman. It was my new Wested goat. I put it on, and it fits perfectly. I'm pretty lucky, both jackets I've ordered from Wested have shown up fitting very well. I've never had to even consider sending one back.

Here are the specs:

Raiders jacket
Raiders collar
Authentic brown goatskin
40.5" Chest
23.5" Sleeve (tapered)
5'9" Height
Underarm gussets
X-Box stitching
Rectangular sliders
Cotton body/sleeve lining
Tapered sleeves

Here is a shot of the underarm gusset. Wested only offers a one piece gusset, so I was not able to order the "Jagger lips" configuration.

No; I almost had him do it, though. See, I measured myself for my first Wested, the lamb, and it came to me fitting like a glove. So, I just took those same measurements and applied them to this jacket, and got the same result. When I first did the measurement, I gave myself about an extra inch in the chest, and it worked out. The sleeve measurement is still the original measurement I took in my living room with a tailor's tape measure.

Nope. I'm keeping my lamb as the distressed jacket, and this as my normal wear jacket.

Nope. Gemma told me they only offer a one piece gusset, and I wanted them, so I took that.

It's kinda stiff. Of course, it's brand new, and goat is a tougher hide than lamb. It's also a little heavier, but not so much as that it would make a big difference.

Hey that looks jacket looks good on your house and on your chair.

The color looks right on with your lamb really. I wonder why my leather comparisons looked so drasticly different. Maybe I was too zoomed in.

Hey is that satin lining? *IndyDoc ducks* I hate to bring that up, but that picture of your cotton lining would have been a great example of the cotton looking slightly shiny. (in that now locked an maybe deleted thread)

Beautiful jacket, Strider. The second jacket feels nice, doesn't it? You get that feeling that if you mess up one, at least you have a back up! I am speaking from experience. My horsehide hasn't come off me since I got it and my lamb has been neglected in the closet (though it's tough to wear lamb in Boston in January!)

I am looking forward to seeing some action shots. Any thoughts about #3???

I'm looking forward to getting some taken! LOL. Thanks for the compliment. As for my next jacket, I might try horsehide or cowhide. However, if goatskin is any indication as to the stiffness of either of those two leathers, I might hold off for awhile. Is the goatskin supposed to be stiff for the first while you wear it? Now I know what you mean when you say: "Nothing drapes like lamb".

I don't know about how goatskin breaks in. Goatskin will probably be my #3!
Horsehide is stiff. That is true, but it is an amazing lustrous material, and this dark brown color that Peter uses is beautiful. And, of course, the russet color of regular Horsehide is amazing as well. There is something about wearing a Horsehide jacket; the material that many jackets from the 30's were made of.

I suppose you should enjoy this one a bit before thinking about the next one!

The sleeve goes from wide where the shoulder seam meets the torso of the jacket, to thin in the wrists with tapered sleeves. In a normal Indy jacket, the sleeves don't taper off (get thinner) toward your wrist area. The jackets used in Raiders did not have tapered sleeves, but it is an option you can request if you don't want the jacket sleeve to be hanging off of your wrist. The sleeves on my lamb do that. That fact makes it easier for the wind to blow right up the jacket's satin lined sleeve (as there's this huge gap between my wrist and the underside of the sleeve) and make me cold. When your arms and hands are cold, your torso will be too, for the most part.

I ordered tapered sleeves (with cotton lining this time) to prevent that, and they do, even if they make my arms look skinny.

How does one go about breaking a stiff jacket in? I know it's probably a pipe dream to think this jacket will ever feel like my lamb, but IS it possible? Or is it just something time will have to work on? What would be real nice, would be to get a horsehide A2 Bomber Jacket, or something similar. Something that would keep me much warmer than the Wested if that's what I needed.

I must have really gotten lucky with my Wested goat. It was quite soft when I got it. In fact, I wasn't sure at first if I hadn't gotten lamb by accident. Anywho, I've had it for over a year now and its very supple. Its been rained on, dragged over rock and generally worn daily. It's finally starting to show some distressing along the cuffs and storm flaps. So in short Strider, just wear the heck out of it and it will break in nicely.

So, I guess the moral is: wear it! It is soft to me, but much stiffer than the lam. However, I have owned the lamb now for at least 6 months months now, and did not fail to wear it every day. That, and it's been distressed. So I can see where my lambskin jacket would be much softer than a brand new goatskin jacket. Though, I am wearing it every day now, so that ought to help.
