New Alden Boot Photos

I ordered a pair of Alden 405 boots on July 12 and they told me I'd probably have to wait until October to receive them. But to my surprise, the boots came on July 20. Below are some pictures I took of the boots fresh out of the box right after I received them. The older Aldens in my photos are a pair I got almost a year ago and have mostly worn in non-abusive conditions. I have regularly treated the older pair with regular Pecards dressing, which accounts for its darker color. I have also treated the sole stitching on the old pair with brown Pecards a few times. The shoe laces on the older pair are also ones that I bought separately to replace previous pairs of shoe laces that had broken.

Old boot loose hook and replacement hook detail (I had to replace a hook that came off because one pair of replacement laces I used was too wide and stretched the hooks. Anyway, be sure to use laces that don't place much stress on the hooks).

BTW, I'm always interested in how people size these things, did you get professionally measured or did you do the old "half a size smaller, up a width"

I just got my boots a half size under what I usually wore but I kept the width the same. The boots in the photos are both size 8 1/2 D.

Do you polish your boots from time to time?

I wore my boots almost everyday at school last year. I don't polish my boots but I regularly apply Pecards dressing to them, which I melt on with a hair dryer.

My only issue is that in that last pic with you in the hat, they seem to make you look a little short.

That just goes to show how much the heels can wear down on the Aldens. I'll get mine re-heeled eventually.

But I do have a question or ya thats slightly related

Where did you get the replacement boot hooks?

Ive been looking for some for my (non-alden) shoes, and i cant find them around town, any help would be awesome.

--Ps sorry for the threadjack, but i really didnt want to start a whole new one dedicated to boot hooks

I really like the brown tint on your older Aldens.
After repeated Brown Kiwi and Brown Pecards dressing treatments, my (new) Aldens still have a reddish/cordovan tint.
It's OK, actually makes them look really classy - but I am curious how to make them a darker brown when they get older ...

Where did you get the replacement boot hooks?

Forrest_Bell, I brought the damaged boot into a shoe repair shop and asked how I could get a new hook put on. The person working there ended up punching in a new hook. I'm not sure where they got the hook or exactly how they put it on. Anyway, it only cost about $2 or $3 to get the new hook. No problem with the threadjack, I had the same dilemma a few months ago when I was worried about my boot hooks.

...I am curious how to make them a darker brown when they get older ...

Spooky, It seems like the brown Pecards dressing would work for this.

I've been wearing my boots almost everyday for a year and they don't even come close to looking like that.

Tristan: Is there a size difference between the old boots and the new ones, because in the picture comparing the soles the new boot looks bigger?

By the way what size did you order in the new because I'm still waiting for my Aldens that I ordered back in April (or maybe even May?)

Jimdiana, I ordered both pairs of boots in size 8 1/2 D. The new boots look bigger because of the angle in which the boots were placed and because the old boots' soles have worn down some over time. The subtle toe region curl up on the old boot also makes part of the boot seem more distant from the camea and therefore smaller.

Great pics. I like seeing the comparison shots between brand new Aldens and a well worn pair.

I'm assuming you used the Pecard's Brown to get them that dark and not the regular Pecards?

EDIT: I see in your post you just used the "regular". Wow, they got pretty dark.

nice boots. I ordered mine a couple days befor the 4th of july and they told me it would be 6 weeks. I still havent gotten them so I guess I am not going to be lucky like you and get them early. But I can wait

Great pictures. Question: I want to keep the white stitiching light in color. The brown Pecards you used won't darken them?

No, brown Pecards will only darken them some. It is not a polish or dye, but just a color enhancer and leather treatment.

Note that Tristan said he used Regular Pecards and not brown. (amazing they got that dark if that's right) Maybe it has something to do with the hair dryer and melting it in.

Anyway, the old pair is a great screen accurate color IMO. (in most scenes at least. Like most of the gear it can be a different pair boots in a different scene. For example, the truck chase close up of the boot has different laces and is ligher and more redish in color.)

The reddish color is what mine are, and date quite a ways back in the evolution of the 405. The went from brown to red to pumpkin orange to brown again.
