American Eagle Coastal boot- dirt cheap Alden alternative

Post by nevrwhere »

I'm not sure if these have been brought up before. They are available from American Eagle Outfitters and they look okay. The sole color is horrible but for those of us who can't afford a pair of Aldens, the price is just right. They are listed for $29.99.

the color isent horrible.
I have a 4 year old pair and they are extremely dark brown.

I think one of their designers is a fan!
I like that those shoes are made of "distressed" leather. -A nice touch.

Certainly is a good price.

What's up with the white soles? Some of the Red Wings have that too.

The white 'crepe' sole on the RedWings is heat-resistant. They sell a lot of contractor boots. The heat resistant soles are good for iron-workers - step on a coal, you don't melt your boot. But they are not very hardy - if used as a daily wear boot, you could go through the crepe soles on a RedWing in a couple months - although mileage varies, and some folks don't have that problem.

Not sure if the AE boots are also heat-resistant, or just copying the look of a contractor boot. To the best of my knowledge AE is not a contractor supplier by and large.

AE used to have a 'Bleacher' boot...I wonder if the 'Coastal' is the same thing?

He is referring to the sole of the boot, not the leather itself.

I've seen these in person and they aren't TOO bad :? but not as good as the old version that just had the black soles. But for the price, definately a keeper.

have a nice day.

Got the boots today. They aren't bad, but just as I feared, the sole color is terrible. Not a problem though, hit it with a little black shoe polish and they look pretty good too. They definitely aren't Aldens but they will work for this year. Maybe I will be able to afford the real deal next year. Great price though at $29.99.

Is the sole on that one kind of soft/spongy, or nice and hard like a regular hiking boot?

Keep an eye on it, that might really be a heat-resistant sole, then, which sometimes wear down fast. That would be a shame if it did, this is a nice cheap close-enough.

Thanks for the great information so far, though! :D
