Fedora: proper fit.

Post by Prof. Ed »

Well, I cut my hair short and now my hat seems to fit differently. I'm not sure if it is mind over matter or not!
My wife says that it looks fine, yet I'm just not quite convinced.
Presently, the hat touches the top of my ears and I guess males a red mark about half way down the forehead.
My question being: should the hat touch the ears or hit above the ears? A fedora has a different fit than a cap, beret, etc. I just can't tell.
Please put yours on and see where it hits.

Thanks,

Prof. Ed

It's generally supposed to sit just above your ears. Close enough to the point where if you smile, the top of your ears touch the underside of the brim. And with a good Indy hat, why wouldn't you be smiling? :D

Seriously though, every time I cut my hair, my hat fits a little bigger. Give it some time, and it won't feel so bad.

My hat its about 5/8" or so above my ears.

Ed, try folding up a bit of a paper towel and tucking it in behind the sweatband. Its will help snug up your hat a bit. Hwen your hair grows ut you can simply remove it.

I am always putting tape or foam behind sweatbands. BTW, the best thing is the foam with one side that is sticky commonly used to insulate windows and around AC units. Usually, I just use masking tape.

Anyway, there are a million variations to wearing hats. Just don't wear them too far down. Other than that and it's all style.

I've folded a sweatband, too (don't do it to a nice hat, unless you are ready to buy a new one)...but putting a strip of leather INSIDE the folded band really tightened up a hat for me, and there was no way THAT was slipping out.

You guys just cringe when I post this stuff, right? 8-[

Talk about a "pork" pie hat!

I just got a hair cut and my hats fit a tad looser now because of it. I just use the paper towel/foam trick and all is well again!

I recently went from QM length hair to a buzzcut (My students on my floor were stressed, so Cutting Cap'n Jack's hair seemed like a pretty solid stressbuster--and it was!)

My hat now actually fits a bit better, but I've found that no matter your head size, all you have to do is wear it for a few hours (in my case, I work in it, sweat in it, and then the sweat dries and it fits like a glove the next time).

Cheers

If it fits like a glove, shouldn't you be wearing it on your hand then? :?

That was after you tried kleenex tissues but forgot to take them out of the box, right?

Yeah, but also after I used a couple tissues and tried the same thing. Although it felt kinda gross, it did keep the hat still.

It wasn't only for a better fit but also effective as a felt stiffener.
