Another explanation for 3M$'s crease marks........
I just thought I would show what I was talking about, as I think it is much more plausible, to me anyways. Ok, take a fur felt hat and crush it, as one would do if artificially distressing a new hat for a film. Here it is. http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/crushed_hat.html
Now punch it back out, (this one is my own hat and I cinched the ribbon tight to get the Cairo look), http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/rib ... tight.html
Now, I could see a little hump in the felt where the hat creased when I punched it down, and I rubbed a bit of chalk on it to show it up better. Dirt or Fullers Earth would work as well. Looky here.

If you have trouble seeing it, I am pointing it out here. http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/crease_line2.html
My point is, the stress lines could very well be from the hat being crushed , and it was probably crushed more than once!! Ok, that is my alternitive theory. Fedora

Yes, and the beaver felt sort of resists the lines as well. The hat pictured is a blend and as you move down in quality, the lines become more apparent. The denser the felt, the less pronounced the stress lines appear. FedoraI noticed the marks as soon a s I bashed my AB. Especially in the top bash.

Looks good. If you want the ultimate looking Cairo hat, take a weathered, and beat up hat and remove the sweat. The hat will now be a size too large. Now, loosen the ribbon and cinch that joker down to you regular hat size. It is great for summer wear as it is a very cool hat to wear, relatively speaking. I have a couple like it. Also, when you cinch the ribbon up, you get the grooves as seen on the front of the Cairo hat, that seem to run under the sweat. These occur naturally. And the Cairo hat looks like the sweat has been removed and the ribbon cinched up to make the hat fit. Perhaps the hat was just too hot to wear and they did this, or perhaps the sweat just came loose. FedoraHere's mine with the ribbon cinched.

I have a question. If they did all this to the hat during filming then why didn't they repeat the same steps to get the same look for Temple and Last Crusade?
The quest to get the same look for our hats like HF had in Raiders is almost as elusive as searching for the Ark, Grail or even Bigfoot for that matter.
I don't think it's possible unless you talk to Spielberg and Ford themselves and even they might not remember.

Ok guys I bought this little Polaroid flat screen dvd player that has a really sharp picture on it. So, I decide to watch Raiders last night, by putting this thing on my tummy. It was great!! I started looking for the porkpie stress lines. Now, the only hat that I can see the stress lines in, are the distressed hats. The newer hats, show no signs of ever being a porkpie. This adds to my theory of the lines being distressed related. If a porkpie was used, the lines should, and would be there in the newer hats used in the film. It seems the lines only appear once the hat looks like it has been through hades. That cinches it for me. Fedora

I'm with you Steve.
To begin the chain of 'straightforward explanations' is Nadoolman herself. She said the hat was rolled up, crushed and sat on! She also mentions a base hat that is tall. Theories are all well and fine but sometimes they need to be discarded. The porkpie base hat certainly looks "busted".

Ah, just got these pics in from South America. I made this hat the end of October, and it has been distressed naturally. Notice the stress lines, that would lead to believe it may have been a telescope crown. I can assure you, it never was. Cause I made it!! http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/ab_ ... erica.html
