Shaping my new Fed. Deluxe

Post by Prof. Ed »

Hi all,

I'm attempting the shaping as we speak. I have a professional clothes steamer that I'm using.
I have the crown shaped, no tear drop, pinched in the front, etc. I have the brim in the front at a pretty steep angle. I'm having trouble, from the pictures on the fedora, telling if the brim at the back is curled up or down slightly. I just curled it up some. The hat wants to do that anyway.
Please give me a bit of help with this task.

Thanks,

Prof. Ed

Go to the archives. There's a hat bashing tutorial by JohnNdy right there for you to go by.

Yeah, following the hat tutorial is self explanatory. I would do the crown first. You know the cheater way to do the brims is to put one index finger on the front inside of the brim and the other directly opposite in the back. Slowly pull each finger away from each other. You will have the perfect brim curl. Of course you have a long oval head or extra long oval, your head will natural put in the right curl.

Thanks guys,

I believe I have the hat shaped "ok" except, as I mentioned, does the rear brim have a curl up or down. I usually wear my hats curled down all around.

So you bought the Fed. Deluxe. How much was it all together? I'm thinking about getting one maybe next year after I get the jacket and whip.

Did the hat come unbashed and you have to shape it yourself?

If you get a chance post some pics of the hat. I've seen the hat's pic on the website but I wanted to see what it looked like "in person" so to speak.

Congrats on the hat by the way. :)

Pricing info on the Akubra Federation can be found here.

The hat comes open crowned, you must shape it yourself.

Styling instructions come with the hat, but an tutorial for getting that "Indy" look can be found here.

Very easy, simple to follow directions, by COW's own JohnNdy. Enjoy.

Note that JohnNdy's tutorial was written before Akubra began cutting the brims dimensionally themselves as a standard practice. I believe that cutting the brim down is no longer necessary.

Pitfall,
Strider has given you all the answers :) I don't know the price of the Federation Deluxe, a friend gave it to me. I feel very lucky having a generous friend. :D

I'll try and post some pictures of my hat and goat Wested, that I purchased from Sergi, when my wife can work the digital gizmo for me!

Knowing that the alteration shop was closed this week, my wife attempted and succeeded altering the sleeve length with regular needles, brut force, and sore hands. A great woman, for sure. Now if she would buy me the pants and shirt, she would even be greater!

Best,

Prof. Ed
