What is Saddle Soap?

Looking at the site Texas Raider is getting his Letap from they also sell Saddle Soap. It says it leaves a matt finish

Would this be a good way to get rid of that new jacket shine?

Or is there some noxious additive in it that means it is not a good idea?

I don't know about shine, but it's a good way to clean your jacket/whip.

Saddle soap is a soft soap that has been used for years for cleaning saddle leathers and the like. There are no harmful ingredients in the soap, and it's perfect to use to clean up a jacket before applying your favorite dressing. It can 'pull down' the shine, but one of the things you're suppose to do after the soap is wiped off and the jacket allowed to completely dry is to lightly buff the leather with a soft cotton cloth. This brings a soft shine back....but nothing like the original gleam. You then apply the leather dressing to restore the moisture lost in the cleaning.

Just follow the instructions with any and all saddle soaps, and you'll be happy with your results....your jacket will thank you too if it's dirty. This works best for jackets that haven't been artifically distressed. Saddle soap has been used for generations to help KEEP gear in good shape, but can be used to clean old leather too if used gently.

I knew thst it's the traditional cleaner used for riding tack. So it's just soap albeit a specialist kind? I'd seen a couple of sources on the internet claiming it was particularly alkaline and recommending the more modern leather cleaners (usually someone selling said cleaners!

) But with the thumbs up I feel better.

I'd thought it might be like sugar soap which isn't really soap in usual sense.

You can say that again, feel like the kid who wasn't invited to the party

I wanna see Goblers jacket! Hope he got on ok with Peter. His years of slicing leather means he's lethal with a butter knife.
