what to use instead of fullers earth?

Post by Indiana George »

What can I use instead of fullers earth to put on my hat and jacket instead of fullers earth? I tried cat litter but it's too dark, i want a more sandy color.

Any ideas?

Plain old dirt? I can personally attest to the fact that the gear looks really cool when you get it dusty and dirty. :)

I remember someone posting about Chinchilla bath, and that it's pumice dust, very similar to one of the ingredients of Fuller's Earth, so I picked up a bunch, and after trying it out, this is my assessment: Use dirt.

Or talcum powder. Obviously it will be more white and will give you the not-so-adventuorus aroma of rose petals or whatver your preferred brand is, but it will act in the same ways as fullers earth and get into the seams and grroves of the jacket just as well.

A tip for the hat I learned from the Daddy of distressing - use a powder puff to apply in a stipple effect.

I just found out that a good beauty supply will sell fullers , they use it for facial mud packs. There's one in the mall by me so Im off to see if they have some.

Pick out a shade of your wife or significant other's makeup and brush away. That's what I did and it looks great, and will not budge if the hat gets wet. Dirt and fullers will get spotty if it gets wet.

But what do you tell your wife when she catches you going through her makeup?

Here's what I've used before:
Coty Airspun Translucent Powder
I've seen it at places like Walgreens or CVS Pharmacy. I think Target and Walmart may even carry it. You lift the lid up and there's a powder puff applicator filled with a bunch of powder. I've had mine for at least 5 years. A llittle goes a long way.

I'm gratful for the advice but i dont wanna small like makeup when I go to a party. I 'm not sure what you all mean by dirt but dirt is black and I wont use sand. I went to the craft store and they had nothing, it blew me away. I guess I'll go as a clean indy.

The Coty makeup doesn't smell like makeup to me, especially if you're using a small amount. I don't ever recall Fuller's having a smell, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

The Coty is like the color of my skin (see avatar). It's a light skin color. If you go to my Carrie Fisher thread in the Scrapbook, you can see a pic of me with my hat. The front of the ribbon has some of the Coty on it in the ribbon area.

Ah...dirt is a generic term. Dirt here (southern California) is mostly sand- or clay-based, so it tends to be light when dry, dark when wet. I wasn't aware there were many places where all the dirt is black, unless you live on a volcano. If I wanted black dirt, I actually have to buy 'potting soil'. ;)

The fuller's earth does not have a smell, per se. It's not makeup so much as an ingredient. No smell added.

Thanks all,
Well, here's what I did. I took some kitty litter and crushed it to a powder on my basement floor with a cinder block and used that and it worked great! I'm very dusty now. I didn't want to go as super clean Indy, it looks kinda generic, even though dirty Indy may keep the dolls away but lets hope not:)

George

thanks again..I
ll post pics soon

:-k Are there any active ingredients in kitty litter one should not be putting on a felt hat...?

I don't know myself, just thought I'd ask quick before it sits on there too long...

I don't think so but if my cat uses my Akubra as a litter box I'll use up one of his lives real quick.

George

"I know what you're wondering, CAT...is did you use up 7 lives, or 8? To tell you the truth, in all the excitement, I kinda lost track myself. So the question you gotta ask yourself is, Do you feel lucky, CAT? Do ya?"
