PJ, I couldn't help it...I have just so WANTED to do this!

Take a peek. Top row, hat lined up as blocked - w/ the little internal ribbon dead on the back of my head. Bottom row, turned about where I want it.
Image
Notice the red 1, 2, & 3.

Right above the 1, is where the right-side brim takes a much sharper bend from the front down angle to rejoin the nice curve of the back of the brim. See how much more of the underside of the brim you see here? You can even see the edge of my sweatband!

Right above the 2, you can see the lowest drop of the front brim is now over my right eye. This is just twisting the hat on my head, I didn't play with it here like I usually do, to exaggerate that dip.

While the left side looks largely unaffected, there is a subtle difference. Note the broader cross-section of the brim right above the 3. This makes the whole sweep of the left side stronger, flowing from the front dip in a long continuous swoop all the way to the back.

That's the turn.

There's more little points that 3thoubucks and others have pointed out, like the humps in the brim, the wicked upflips of the corners out by your temples as viewed by the front, etc., but those 1-2-3 are the easiest thing to show in a comparison. ;)

J

P.S. Oh, yeah, now my bash is off-center. Cool! :D

P.P.S. Want to see something screwy? Set that set of 6 heads as your wallpaper, tiled. Yaaaaughg!

It is very screen accurate in all of the photos IMHO. I think it's because you have a fairly large melon, just like Ford, and the hat distorts perfectly. No offense, and I'm sure there's none taken, as you are a proponent of the "theory".

Oh, he's used to it. Yes it is a big melon. In fact, if you split his head open, you'll find pumpkin seeds!

And I'm also a proponent of melons in general. (Read into that what you will.)

(But thanks for the nice comments. My only regret about that comparison set above was that I failed to make the crazy Harpo Marx face I've been working on...you know, eyes crossed, cheeks puffed, tongue sticking out...I'd like to think that would have been appropriate to how serious we are over a floppy brim. ;))

Pull the other leg, it plays jingle bells.

In case you really aren't just yanking... http://www.raidershat.com/

Or are you wondering if we have found a way to turn the brim w/o turning the crown...? That's easy, put it on the spindle in the washing machine, run it for an hour.

Argh! #-o You got me... ;)
Indiana_Tone wrote:I've turned the hats I have to see the effect. No question that it works and nails the look to a "T". I just have a case of Asymmetricitis, basically. Love the Raiders fedora, but am not in the market to have it look exactly like Indiana Jones' in every aspect. (Although, oddly enough, I'm aware that the specific brim shape is one of those things that makes the Raiders fedora unique from the others but can live without brim specifics.) It's the bash and crown for me.
That's decent of you to chime in, then, considering your symmetrical-preference. ;) Good un, ya! :D

Indiana_Tone wrote:BTW, pic #2 in that last round really has the look down, Jerry.
Hehehe...the funny thing is, I don't care if mine looks exactly like it or not, I just like the floppy beat in Cairo look. ;) I like to be able to slap it on my head in a hurry w/o worrying...and for me, so long as it looks symmetrical, it's going to feel that way. So 'warped' is for me. Yeah, I know, we all saw that coming... ;)

Great pics  Best I've seen for truely showing off the true 'turned' look.

Hey, Admins, surely these pics are worthy of entering into the sticky thread at the top of the forum? :)

I think there's better turn pics out there, but thanks for the nod. If there is a need for that, I'll redo them w/ the Harpo Marx face. ;) But I will go back and update the title of the thread at least. 8) Thanks, Skippy. :D

Hey, like you said, maybe I'm just blessed w/ more of a melon. ;)

Truth is, my head shape is close to a long oval - a round oval at the very least. Steve and I considered the measurements a bit, and decided to go w/ a round oval, to get more tension in the brim. One theory is that part of the 'blooming' effect of the crown is due to extra pressure on the front and back of the sweatband - i.e., the head is longer relative to the block shape the hat was made for, or i.e. again, maybe Ford's head was a round or long oval, but the hat was blocked on a round block.

You can see what I mean about the blooming by just holding your hat in front of you so you can see if from the front, now stretching it lengthwise by holding it inside the back and front of the sweat. Notice how the sides at the ribbon seems to **** in, so the top of the crown appears wider than the base? That's the 'mushroom effect', or 'blooming'. Yes, I'm making up these words as I go.

Lookin' good, Jerry! Thank gawd, Fedora used his wisdom to omit your string-with-a-whistle request on your new lid, though!
