Sitting Down

Does anyone elses jacket bunch up a lot at the bottem and push out a lot at the chest when you sit down and the jacket is zipped? I was just curious because it is not the most comfortable thing in the world and has kind of bugged me since I got my jacket.

Yep mine does. I unzip my jacket before I sit because of it. Its really the only thing I don't like about my Wested. The reason mine does it is because it is a ToD with an extra 1.5" in the front. All of that material has to go somewhere and up is the only way I guess. On a side note, I have a vintage A-2 that fits me perfectly, it doesn't bunch up at all.

Well I guess that explains it because I have been thinking that my jacket is about 2 to 2.5 inches too long. I wonder If I should send it back and get some material taken off. I have had it about a year now and it hasn't raised up at all so I don't know if it will, mabey goat doesn't rise up over time.

I don't know about you, but overall its a fairly minor thing with me.

To clarify what I mean by pushing up: When zipped and I sit it either pushes up or it pushes out down low like I have a beer gut. IMO, if my jacket was a Raiders jacket I wouldn't have this problem; it just seems like its the extra length bunches up.

I have a Cotton Raiders and it does that... or the collar goes backwards, so the part that should be against the back of my neck is further away than normal.

you know I never have zipped up my wested jacket. Other than my turnout jacket I don't think I ever zip up any jacket that I own. I think i lerned something about myself.

I think back in the days when there was still such a thing as etiquette in America, men unbuttoned their suit jackets before sitting. Unless it was a double-breasted jacket. I may be wrong about that, but for some reason I think I'm right. Anyway, this may be the reason - clothes are tailored while standing, not sitting.

Happens to me, but it has happened with many jackets, i this it is just because they are a thicker material, and as said before, need somewhere to go. Illinois

I think the addition of the extra leather behind the zipper is causing this phenomenon. Does this happen without the extra leather?

That happened with every aviator, biker or cabbie leather jacket I've ever owned if I tried sitting down with the jacket zipped. Unzip it.

It's the zip that causes it, adjusting the length either way will have no effect. It's the sign of a well put together jacket.

This will happen with any leather jacket that falls below where your natural waist line bends. Any extra material below your waist will hit your thighs and stack up. If your jacket is room any happens to be of a heavier hide, that will only compund the issue. By comparison most cloth jackets can roll and fold under so you may not notice as much.

Hmmmmm... Makes me wonder (again) what hide it is. My cowhide felt like an armour sometimes when sitting down, but thats what it's supposed to I guess. My goat is much more flexible and I wonder if thats why lamb was originally used in the first place - It simply drapes a whole lot better in all situations. Could that be it, what hide is Your jacket Brendan?

I don't own an Indy jacket yet but that describes every other jacket I've ever owned.

This will happen with any leather jacket that falls below where your natural waist line bends.

But if you’re jacket is too short you end up doing the “Captain Picard” all day.

yeah I've got a motorcycle jacket that's about 1.5-2 inches shorter than my wested... it doesnt bunch but my wested raiders does... for those of us not of Harrison Ford's hight this also creates a slight issue when the jacket is worn with the holster, as the jacket is made to our size, but the holster isn't scaled for a 5'9"ish guy...

Yup, the holster is made to fit the gun, not the man.

You're absolutely 100% correct, and it is still proper etiquette to button your jacket when you stand and unbutton it when you sit. With a jacket, of course, you can zip it up and sit down outside, especially if it is cold!
