I found a whip!

Post by Indiana George »

Just after I posted my message about needing a whip I found this on Ebay for 40 bucks! It''s all black but I'm going to wrap some lighter brown leather around the handle to give it some color and character. What do you think?

Not bad at all! That is a very Indy looking whip, aside from the color. As a matter of fact, that's SO Indy looking it's GOT to be from another COW member...look at those handle knots!

J

P.S. You may not have much luck overwrapping, though...so I'd buy it a) if you can live w/ the color as is, and b) BECAUSE IT'S ONLY $40! (Hope it's a quality whip. It almost looks like a prototype IOAB...)

I like it but 12 foot is a lot of whip! Hope it hangs well on my belt. Maybe he is a COW member, we'll see. 40 bucks for any whip is a good deal, I can practice with this one. I've never cracked a whip before, is it hard?

Thats a great looking whip, color is off, but still what a deal. For me cracking the whip isn't too hard, but then I'm not trying to be too fancy either

Once you get it to crack once, you'll be amazed how easy it becomes. It's the first one that's hard, as far as I can tell.

Now...most folks start w/ a shorter whip than that - 6' to 8' - I'm not sure how you'd start on a 12'!!! You might need to at least borrow a shorter whip to get the hang of the rhythm before you can get the big one going.

But I could be wrong...I'm not a whip expert. Just a guy w/ a whip. ;)

I actually used to own a whip when I was young. It was 6 feet long with a wood handle. i got pretty good with it. In fact, and this is all very true, a friend of mine got in a fight with a guy named Chris, they were fighting and Chris pulled a stick or table leg or something out of a trash can and went for Eric. I had my hand in my jacket on my whip the whole time, I saw the stick , pulled out my whip and yanked it out of Chris's hand. It was funny cos for half a sec they both stoped and looked at me like..wooow. That was the most indy I'll probable ever feel in my lifetime.

Hey George,

If you were thinking about an IOAB bullwhip, I'll trade you an 8 ft IOAB even up for the 12 ft swivel handle bullwhip pictured in the thread. ( so $40 for an $80 whip, sound good?)

That whip looks almost identical to my old 10 footer. Unfortunately its now kind of destroyed after my sister got a hold of it. The fall has broken off and its made in a way it can't really be replaced.

Colby, the fall on your whip can be replaced by a whipmaker who is familiar with that type of classic American fall. The only thing is that the strands at the point have to be strong enough to be rebraided. So, if you have a few strands sticking out of the point of the whip, pull on one of them and if it cracks or breaks then it's probably too weak. If they seem strong, however, I could put a new fall on your whip for $15 plus a few bucks for shipping.

I think the strands are too brittle. Its an old whip and has taken some serious use over the years. It's really only good for display right now. :( Plus I am trying to save up for a good roohide 8 footer. I should be able to get one in a few weeks. :D

I made a great deal with Adam at winrichwhips. An even trade of my Bushmeir 12 foot whip for a 8 foot IOAB whip. Adam says Bushmeir are a good and one old the oldest whip makers around and he collects them so I was glad to be able to get it his way and of course to get a brand new whip for him, can't wait!

George

Ps, I'm going to sit down and watch The Librarian (Quest For The Spear)
with Noah Wyle from ER, I saw the previews long ago but didnt catch it, I'll give a review later if it's good.

Thanks Adam!

Not real sure who I'm going to get my whip from. I'm not going to get a David Morgan just due to the price. I would opt for the IOAB but I wanted to push my money towards a 12 plait roohide whip this time around since my previous was 8 plait and latigo leather. If I don't manage to get enough money for a regular bullwhip by next year I may opt for the IOAB after all. :D

I dont mind that Adam got the deal, he was gracious to make the offer and after all, he collects them, I dont. I really just wanted a good looking whip for my costume for halloween. It's turning into more but thats what led me here to begin with.

It will be cool to see what kind of condition your Bucheimer is in, George.

Jerry, I was the highest bidder on the recent NOS Bucheimer on Ebay with 4 seconds left, then some guy sniped it

I talked with the guy on the phone and it sounds like he has quite a few Bucheimers and says they are the only whips he likes to throw (talk about tragic taste ...) So I'm trying to work out a trade, trying to trade one of my swivel handle bullwhips for the Bucheimer. Initially he wanted $400 worth of whips  but now I think we're getting to something more reasonable.

Ok so in watchin LC today, that whip looks close to the color of the whip young Indy grabs while in the lion's train car, maybe I'm off here, but it looked close to me...anyway just a thought

Adam, Glad to hear that old bullwhip is getting a good home.

Kev, There is a photo of that LC bullwhip in the gear section of Indy Gear; it is the one with the “orange” handle. That Bucheimer is a very different type bullwhip from the one used in that Last Crusade scene. However it is similar to the bullwhip to the one used in an episode of the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (Curse of the Jackal).

I like those old whips for the history they have, I don’t check on eBay too often but I usually keep an eye out for them at antique shops and such. I haven’t had much luck though  . Nice find.

Hey George,

The Bucheimer is nice. It's actually a 10 footer (more like 10.5 ft). I took the knot out of the fall and put on a popper. I was surprised how well it cracked considering the relatively small diameter of most of the thong. I bought some leather dye today and re-dyed the whole thing. I'm not sure what kind of dye was used on it before but it faded leaving the formerly white parts of the whip a blue-ish color. Now it's all a consistent black.

Now I'm trying to decide if I want to keep it, sell it, or put it on Ebay. I think now that it's re-dyed it would look a lot better in pictures, for sure, making it probably sell better on Ebay.

I'm gonna grease it up really well tomorrow and give it a good rub down to see if any excess dye comes off.

Have a Happy Halloween!
