The "V"

Post by Harrison_Davies »

Hi Guys,

Does anyone else have this problem? (If it is a problem)

I seem to get a kind of upside down V shape on the back panel of my Wested. Was wondering if it is supposed ot do this, or whether it is supposed to sit straight?

Regards,

I would not pay much attention to that. Unless you get an off the rack jacket its completely custom and I have had jackets that are exactly the same measurements and have worn them and put them side by side on the hangar and ones says 38 and one says 40.

In relations to the V it does seem like its because the sliders on the side straps are too tight and that should resolve the problem.

Thats my problem - getting a jacket tapered enough to fit my waist.

Really you want the jacket a perfect/tight fit on your waist without using the sliders. The sliders aren't there for adjusting the waist size, only for closing the pleats and design really.

Have you ever noticed that you're comments are very unfriendly in allmost every thread? You can't ##### arround in every single thread, telling people that there questions are pointless, goofy, wiered, etc. We are on a forum which discuss every single tiny spot we find and think off. There is so much negative input comming by you that some people round here feeling worry.
I did not read every single thread in here, but I have never seen a picture of yourself in gear, but shouting at other people all the time, I don't know
So I ask you nicely to quit this rudeness

The only thing I can see is that your shoulders seem a bit rounded, which could be causing the jacket to hang the way it does in the back. If so, it's either poor posture or the way God built you. If the former, square your shoulders and stand up straight. If it's the latter, a good tailor might suggest some padding in the shoulders to correct the way the jacket hangs. Frankly, I think it's very minor issue. I wouldn't waste any extra money trying to fix it. After all, how much time do you spend looking at your backside?

As for the sliders, I believe they are there to adust the jacket's fit at the waist. At least, that's all I use the ones on mine for. After reading all the threads concerning the pleats, I'm wondering if some of us obsess a bit too much about them. Mine gap open a tiny bit towards the top no matter how tightly I have the sliders adjusted and I think it looks fine. They're never going to lay perfectly flat and closed. In fact, they shouldn't if they're going to perform the function for which they were designed.

Don't sweat the small stuff and enjoy the jacket!

Cheers!

I think it fits well. You want some drape and some give here and there. It all depends on the sort of fit you want. In TOD, Indy's jacket was slightly oversized and draped over his shoulders. Raiders was a tighter, but I still recall some wrinkling here and there. I think it looks good.

Here's a picture of mine and it looks similar and I wouldn't change a thing about mine:

Harrison, your jacket looks fine. Loosening the side straps may help, but IMO you don't have a problem anyway. :D

I kinda recall looking at Noel Howard's ToD jacket, that he had in his collection, under MK's regular-guy.com website. When Chris King put the jacket on, it looked very much (at least to me) that the jacket had that V-shape going for it....

But all in all, I don't see any V-shape & your jacket looks great! :D

Kind Regards,

Um, yeah, a V shape, ok---The V is barely noticeable, it looks natural. Your jacket looks good.

From that pic the jacket looks like it fits fine :) I wouldn't worry about it, looks very nice.

You certainly don't want it smaller across the back, as then the shoulder seam will feel to tight & the action pleat will open up (trust me on this  )

I believe it was Peter who told me this was not the case, although I could be wrong.

Ken, if you say that it came from Peter himself, I won't doubt you. But after fiddling with mine for a while I have to say that they do a great job snugging up the fit of the jacket at the hips. I just figured that it was a secondary purpose that they're anchoring the pleats at the bottom. Sort of a chicken or the egg kind of thing, eh?

Cheers!

Baggers, Peter told me that too many years ago. To tight of snugging to anchor the pleats will cause the action pleats to gap at the top. The straps are only to keep the side gaps straight, and allow the pleats to work properly. To snug, and you can actually rip them out of the seams, unless they're box stitched.

I can accept that. Especially considering the light weight nature of the lambskin. I guess I just don't mind a little gap in the pleats at the top. I don't expect them to lay perfectly flat. Besides, I don't snug the straps down too tightly anyway. I just pull them in enough to give the jacket a slightly closer fit at the waist to give it a trimmer look when it's zipped.

Cheers!
