1940's style Fedora?

Watching "Out of Africa" the other day, and reading the rumours about "Indy 4" really made me think about hat-styling.

It's a well known fact that a hat should somehow suit Your face, Your head and in general support Your personality. Little details makes the difference. Anyone trying to find the Fedora that looks just "Indy" when watching Yourself in the mirrow will know that.

But when I saw Robert Redford and Klaus Maria Brandauer I realized that I simply do not believe there is a certain periods correct hat for everyone. KMB looked absolutely silly with a far to wide brim and RF only managed to appear serious in his hat because it had a narrower brim. They are both great actors and the film works, off course, but when looking at details I would say, that even with the fashion from that period I would have chosen another hat if I was KMB. His hatmaker should have said: "The period is right, the hat is right - but it just dont work. Gotta find You something else. Let me show You this tropical helmet Mr. Brandauer..."

So what will the Fedora look like in Indy 4 ? What will be the correct bash and size/height/brim/crown for an adventurer is his 60's in the 1940's?

At that age, if he's been through tons of adventure and lived to tell about it, then let the man wear whatever hat he wants!

Well, technically since Indy was born in 1899 and IF the movie is set in the 1940's - wouldn't that make Indy in is 40's also?

The more I think about it and the more I see the way OLD HF looks these days combined with the GARBAGE that Spielber and Lucas have been producing over the last few years - I hope they walk away from the project and don't tarnish the history...

But as far as the hat - tall crown all the way baby with the center dent, no tear-drop @#$%...

Hey, I personally think that a proper teardrop bash or C dent is quite lovely, especially on my vintage Royal Stetson Deluxe and Dobbs Cross Country. Sure, it's not "Indy," but it's still a nice look if done right AND it's period correct, so don't "bash" it.

This one isn't too bad in that regard, its a Royal Stetson Vita-felt from the 40s.

I thought that the period setting of Indy 4 was supposed to match HF current age?

Hence shouldn't it be set in the 1950/60's?

Have to agree with Fedoraman, SS has been making rubbish films for a while (Saving...Ryan... was the last good one I can remember) & Uncle George has just lost it. The SW OT is the stuff of holy grails

But the prequels are pretty uninspiring IMO & a CGI/Blue-screen #### on film! :evil:

I'd like another Indy film, but not if it's going to tarnish the Indy OT. Besides LC wrapped everyting up as the final film. Seems kind of silly to cheapen that with ANOTHER follow up

That may be a well know fact around here but we cannot assume people do things according to the laws of style. This is especially true in movies.

When wide brim hats were in, I assume men wore them because they were "in style". The majority of people follow trends. They did then and do today.

I think if you are making a period film you have dress the cast accordingly. Even if it looks odd to the viewer. One cannot make The Three Musketeers with narrow brims.

I think Fords hat in Indy IV should reflect the times he lives in. If it takes place in the 50's, Indiana Jones would probably look 'stylish'. That might mean a smaller brimmed hat.

Of course I prefer a total 'Raiders' look.

just look at us...Fedora's arent "in" at all but we still wear them.

I think he's going to look in his closet and just symbolically re-don his old friend (the hat). Having it set in the 40's wouldn't be a problem, as wide brims had their peak then, but I believe the movie is going to be in the 50's. Hat brim lengths coincided with lapel sizes- i.e., 20's- medium sized lapels, medium sized brims. 40's- wide lapel, wide brim. 60's-70's- narrow lapel, narrow brim (Connery's bond).

Not much changed from the 40's through the late 50's, with the exception that you saw a lot more banded edged brims, the crowns dropped some, and you saw more C-dents than the fore aft dent...but it wasn't until the early 60's that I saw my first narrow brim hat.

Oh, by the way, FL, I'm still awaiting the shipment of that hat in your photo. Must have gotten lost in the mail!

Yes Sir! Thats'e one - With the wide brim and longer feathers. How could I forget? (just another insider).

Thanks for all replys. From this point I think there could go some kind'a type-casting in the Fedora. Maybe the hat itself will be timeless and now that Indy made the Poet THE adventurer hat in 1981 the future will see just small variations of this.

Like the bad guys were always in black and the hoods always had a scare, the adventurer will wear an Indy-style Fedora. The old colonel will still wear a tropical helmet and the girl will wear as little as possible.

Good looking Stetson! Maybe the perfect "softer" version for the aging Indy?
