My wife and the fedora she doesn't know I ordered.

Post by IllinoisJones »

Well, I did it, I called Steve and ordered my beaver adventurebilt. However, I am being a little sneaky about it. I got my father to spend the cash on the hat, and week by week, I am giving him the cash back in such small increments that she will never notice, Hehe I win. Best part is he said he will call it a present. Illinois

That's one of the side benefits of marriage - it really helps to develop a mans capacity to be downright sneaky...erm I mean sense of diplomacy, yeah that's what I meant...

I see you didn't take my advice, but that's ok, man. I just hope it doesn't come back home to bite you later but it probably will.

Good luck, mate and congrats on the new lid. You'll dig it.

One question though. I thought you said money was no object, so...why didn't you just buy the hat yourself or pay your dad off in full? You said it was your money, right?

True, but in order for it to be discreet, small increments are necessary.

He's doing it in small incriments so his wife won't notice. :( :? 25 or 50 bucks here and there won't be a noticeable deal, like 235 would.

This is not what marriage should be like. I am saddened somewhat by the fact that a man had to do this just to get something he wanted with his own money, because his wife would not have approved otherwise.

*sigh*

You'll like the Adventurebilt, man. I like mine tons. Congrats on ordering it, however you "had to" do it.

ooohhhh, this could get ugly real fast..
If she even suspects this is what is happening, you are in it deep!

Sneaking it is not the way to do it! It sets a bad precedent. Better to have that one big fight now, than to let misunderstands grow.

But hey, I am not expert on anything...

Congrats on the new lid!

Well, I've been married for 12 years, and I really don't think sneaking around is that great an idea. Just tell her outright you wanted to buy the hat.
If it really is a matter of not being able to afford it, grow up, save the money, and wait until you can.

I hope she doesn't decide to start sneaking around and buying new shoes!

No, I fully endorse the sneakiness of it all. Afterall he'll soon want another one, if honesty was the best policy, he'd only be allowed the one :(

No, I have to disagree here. He does not need to be sneaky. There is no reason why he cannot buy this or any other fedora. If there is no issue with the money or with her making equivalent purchases then fight the good fight and get that hat.

Congratulations on the hat purchase. I know you'll be delighted.

I connot imagine the inner working of your marriage, so I will reserve all comments on that. But since you brought it up! -Personally, I would never get involved in any relationship that places any restriction at all on my personal freedom. Which is, of course, why, I am unattached! 8-[

Well, I called her and told her what was going on, and she said ... fine! She said she didn't mind because I was paying off a small amount to my father, rather than a lump sum. She was worried, because, while I make a good living, I just bout a wested goat, and she was worried about anu unexpected accidents that may occur. She grew up with a family that was less fortunate than my family, so she learned to save and save, but never really understood that it is okay to spend if th money is there. She also said it is fine because I spent the money this month as opposed to last month when I purchased the wested. I will never understand women, I accept this. Illinois

The other thing, is we are paying off some debt to the bank, which takes away some cash, so I admit funds are limited, I asked Steve wha he thought I sshould do, and he said the beaver was better if I could afford it, so I went with the beaver. It won't hurt me in the long run as I do make a fair wage, so maybe I have been a little unfair to her, I view it as this, I make enough where I can pay for it, so I have enough, she views it as we have debt to pay off, so we dont.

Most certainly buy that woman some flowers -- at least! It's always importannt to be able to express financial concerns (and everything else) to your spouse, etc. I'm glad it worked out for you.

Well done, IJ. I've been married to the same woman for almost 30 years now, and can tell you from personal experience....play straight, and you'll never regret it.

Excellent choice on felts too. You get what you pay for, and that hat will last you for years and years, reblock after reblock. You chose wisely on BOTH counts.

Agreed all round on the flowers too! :D

Highest regards!!

Jolly good - alls well that ends well eh?

I thoroughly agree with the above - buy your good lady some flowers, she deserves it!

As I said in your earlier thread on this subject, our wives (or partners) are a million times more important than hats - everytime.

Having said that, I'm glad you were able to work things out and get your AB. As long as it isn't creating too much of a financial strain for your family, there's is no reason why a chap shouldn't have a happy relationship and the odd hat...or three...

Anyway, be sure to post some pics of your hat when it arrives!

Okay, I'm gonna step in here for a moment. Why assume that all women are happy with just shoes? Or a sewing machine? Or even flowers? Heck, I had to get my wife a laptop for grad school! So that otta give me some leeway for buying gear! :-k \:D/

Ya, my wife’s really into technology, she loves clothes, but she has to have all the latest gadgets; laptop, Ipod, PDA, and now for Christmas she wants a new camera that has 97 mega pixels or something like that. I don’t really follow that kind of stuff, I’m into retro, though I do love the DVDs.

The compromise is I get a Wested, and AB (well, the AB I’m buying myself).

Well, I have a wife that, when asked what she'd like as a gift, always says 'either world peace, or all our bills paid.'

Well, since I'm sure neither will get done again THIS year....it never gives me much to work with. :-s

Sorry guys.

I agree with Strider and some of the others.

Marriage should not be about sneaking around and walking on eggshells. From a female point of view, what about your wife. What does she get? A bunch of flowers?

I wholeheartedly agree, Stella. My wife and I have an open dialogue about everything. And even though I talk to her about my "wish lists," we both know what's more important.

I told my wife about the AB I just ordered. I may have over muffled my voice a bit when I told her how much..."oh, don't worry, it was only mrmrphfphprmrmm..." - but I told her.

She also knew I'd been waiting a year, and used a sudden, unexpected, and unneeded windfall as the impetus. So she was cool with it. The bills are paid, my family obligations are first. It's not a matter of getting 'permission', it's reassuring her that I respect my committments to her and the girls FIRST. Hobbies come out of the extra, or they just don't happen at all. Just a matter of common sense for us.

It's just funny you posted this today, because today was her birthday, and I was thinking how LUCKY I am it didn't arrive by today... ...phew! Can't be receiving things for ME on HER birthday. (Okay, Steve, anytime after today is GREAT! ;))

Wow, Jerry, I never knew you HAD common sense! hat's the way it works with us, too. Myy wife knows there's plenty of stuff I want, but I usually restrain myself because of our budget, especiially since she went back for a grad degree. But when I do get something for myself, it usually makes her happy, since so muuch of our currennt budget goes to her school needs. Hmmmm... maybe it's time to get a Morgan....

The nice thing about collecting most of the Indy gear is that it is functional.
Its not like its going to sit on the shelf. If I need a new jacket or hat I can:
a: go to Jacque' Penney' and buy one from China or
b: order one from any of our esteemed vendors.

I like to buy the best I can afford and I am not hard on clothes. I usually
replace them because I get "sick of the site of it". I have a winter jacket
that I've had for over 20 years and my wife has been bugging me for years to get rid of it.
If this isn't the case, when she wants me to replace something, I just buy it off season,
hang it in the closet for a long time, and
bring it out later. When she says,"when did you get that?" I say, "Oh that,
I've had that for months and months."
BTW, I don't deny her much of what she wants, unless its real expensive, then we gotta talk!

I guess she couldv'e been happier as a laptop is what I found when I walked into my house, a nice 17 inch lcd display laptop. I quess she needed it for school, but the thing weighs like 10 pounds. Spite, spite I'm telling you.
