HAT SHAPERS

Anyone has ever seen this website? It seems they sell wooden hat blocks for vintage style hats. In the "famous hats" page there is also the indy ones but i'm not sure there is a block for it. It might be this one

Interesting, I really want my own block, but I think I'll wait out until Fedora offers his for sale. Mistakes will be costly and heart-rendingly bad!!

The Indy ones look too tapered, but the one you have in your post might work.

I think that some time ago one of us was in contact with these folks to try and create an Indy block. I can't remember who it was but it seems highly likely this could be the result. If it is, "Fantastic", I just don' t know how it would work with a flange for reblocks.

I hope Fedora takes a close look at this, I've been driving him nuts with trying to find a good block. "Have you found one yet??? "NO!", Have you found one yet??? "NO!" Have you found one yet??? "NOOOOoooooooo!!" :lol: :lol:

I believe this was the result. The dome looks correct. I hope the crown is high enough.

Rick has one of these blocks. As I remember he had some pretty nice results with it. I'm sure he'll chime in shortly.

Dang! :( When I looked at their details...Yep the height is OK, 5 3/4 inches for medium and large but nothing below 22 1/2 inches, which means no size 7 or even 7 1/8th's .

Rat's...Unless they come up with one for us wee craniums I'm back to

I'm still unclear how you're supposed to use a flange or whether you just iron it out and hand shape..

Seems like he found one. These are better.. They're made of wood and are the actual size of your hat.

I remember that Steve found them for us, i was just curious about this website. 30$ is something that everyone could afford. So i was just curious if they were good for our "cause" :wink:

Well maybe we could help them to improve the quality of their indiana jones blocks. I don't know if Fedora might be interested... in some ways

You are not alone there. Seems Fedora is so busy though at present, he has been unable to get round to it :(

I'll let him chime in on it, but I believe the deal is that you send Steve a PM, and he'll give you the information to contact the guy who makes his blocks. Then you pay the blockmaker directly. He'll charge you what he charges Steve. But I don't think Steve has any plans to stock "for sale".

*ahem* I have one of the shapers and I have had excellent results with it. I should end the story right here. :lol:

I asked the terrific folks at hatshapers how much heat the shaper could take and I was told that it should be okay just under boiling. So surely putting it in the oven on the "warm" setting would not do any damage, right?

While trying to intentionally heat the hat and shrink it while on the shaper, the plastic brim started to melt and it is now all wavy :oops: Funny thing about this is that it will not get unwavy. I tried ironing it and adding heat to it and bending it back where it should be but it is happy right where it is, apparently.

....but, I still use it. I was considering making my own block just by filling this one up with plaster and then maybe building it up 1/16" with bondo or fiberglass. I am not against getting another one either. The folks at Hatshapers are excellent to work with and I have nothing but good things to say about them. The price is right too. Maybe if it cost more, I would not have been so quick to experiment with it.

I have pretty much taken my site down as I needed the webspace for my forum that I started in August (non-Indy). I still have the pictures though. Feel free to send your e-mail address and I can send them to you. If they do not take up too much room, maybe I can put them back up temporarily.
