Will the Akubras soften up after a while?

Post by Doug C »

I'm considering getting one of the Federation Akubras but I've heard some mention that the felt is much stiffer than the ABs. Now, I have an image in my head of a very stiff hat, which is kind of turning me off to it. I definately won't be babying any hat I get but will it soften up if I work it a bit?

The AKubra will begin to soften up after a couple of weeks.

True, in most cases. Mine sure did. But Indiana Fist, who is late of this Board; his never did. That thing was hard as a rock.

The AB is already softer than the Akubra will ever be. IMO

My Akubra Federation Deluxe was as stiff as a helmet when it arrived! :D
I bashed it with steam but that does not make the stiffness go away.
Wearing it and handling the brim will eventually soften it up.
My hat is currently very comfortable. It is not floppy soft but 'well worn'. I am quite pleased with how it feels.
