AB review

Post by prairiejones »

The first thing that I noticed when taking my Adventurebilt out of the box was the quality of the beaver felt. This hat must be touched and handled to be truly appreciated. It is extremely smooth and light to the touch. The color is a very rich, deep, true brown. You can see the quality from across the room.
I have shaped all of my hats myself. This felt is by far superior to work with. It is very pliable and responds well to a little coaxing with the fingers. The brim also responds to whatever bending and shaping is applied. The crown is straight sided making it easy to achieve that one of a kind Raiders look.
Having wanted a Raiders of the Lost Ark fedora for many years, I now know that I have found the hat. To me, the block is dead on, the felt is easy to work with, and the finished product is screen accurate. If you have been searching for the perfect Raiders, as I have, or just want a nice, high quality dress hat, Adventurebilt is the way to go.

prairejones, I have to agree with your review of Steve's Advenutrebilt. I don't think you can really appreciate the quality of his product From photo's ( you need to have it in your hands ). The hat looks fantastic in that photo. Enjoy it and wear it with good health.

erri, what do you mean "not-dark"? If that ribbon were any more dark it would be black. That ribbon looks perfect to my eyes.

He may have been referring to his not being that dark. I have used various ribbons since I started making hats. Now, I will only use the vintage stock until it all runs out. By then, Marc and I will have our special run in. I sent a swatch of my vintage stuff to the manufacturer to be copied for us. Once we get it, all ABs will come with standard ribbon. Vintage quality as it is being made by the same folks that made my vintage stock. Using the same looms. It don't get any better than that!! You cannot buy decent grosgrain unless you have it run special, and that is expensive. I may have to take out a loan to afford it. Fedora

I really like that iron colored ribbon that I have for my Montecristi. Have you ever used that for a AB? Does it work with brown? That ribbon is great.

If i send my hat for a reblock could i have a vintage ribbon too? I would obviously pay for it.

Looks like it fits you perfectly, man. Sits on your head not too high, not too low and a good bash as well. Very Raidersesque.

Folks know how I feel, too. I loved my Akubra's, but Steve mastered the Raiders look, for sure.

It is not black, although I do stock black. It is the vintage iron color, more of a gunmetal gray. Good and dark though. regards, Fedora

What I have is the standard ribbon that Steve is now using. If you look at the my AB or Pagey's most recent, and compare it to the one Erri bought from Pagey, you'll see the difference. Those older ribbons seem to be a lighter brown. Just have her tell him to use the ribbon Praire and Pagie have.

Can anyone comment on the rabbit material versus the beaver? or is it pretty much 'beaver or nothing' (fun to say)

That Raiders bash looks fantastic. I guess if I ever get a second AB, it will have to be a Raiders!

THanks for the complements. I am very happy with how that bash has turned out. No steam, no water, just my fingers.
