Steve, great to hear from you. I just can't believe what I'm seeing on TV. I can't believe the lack of preparedness for the chaos in the aftermath. I understand that in any disaster, people will get hurt and die. It's the lack of response to the mass of humanity escaping the flood and damage that is driving me crazy. The days of, "We just weren't prepared for this," should have ended four years ago this month. Imagine a multi-city 9/11. Gas would be $10 a gallon. I little scary!

safe in North Louisiana

I am in Monroe, LA and we barely got touched. Looks like the Katrina took a hard right turn after hitting land. We are, and have been, a quickly expanding evacuee center with refugees moving in by the hundreds daily. Glad to see Fedora is safe.

A friend of mine works inthe N.O. mayor's office. He says that the news reports have barely scratched the surface. I have long lost family (third cousins, as it were) in Buras, which was below N.O. in Plaquemines Parish and was essentially ground zero. No word .

Good to hear you made it through all right. 90 mph winds as far inland as your location? YIKES!!

I've been glued to the tube this week watching the devastation unfold and shaking my head in amazement. One lesson I've been reminded of during all this is to never depend solely on government to rescue you after a disaster. Have your own emergency plan and supplies (72 hours worth MINIMUM) in place and evacuate the area as soon as you deem it necessary. Don't always wait just for your local officials to tell you, they may be dragging their feet for some reason. Use your head. This past week has shown everyone just how confused and uncertain things can be with even almost a week's prior warning. Having said all that, my wife and I wil be going through our house this weekend looking for clothing and housewares to donate to the evacuees that we are expecting to receive soon in our northern Texas county.

And don't forget to donate money to the Red Cross. I heard last night that they are spending it faster than it's coming in.

Okay, I'm off the soapbox. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming!

Cheers!
