Eye of Horus Cufflink Question

Post by Pyroxene »

I think we agreed at one time that Indy wore Eye of Horus cufflinks in TOD. My question is, does anyone make them?

Thanks,
Pyr.

Guess they'd have to be custom made. Last time this was up, I posted these:

Maybe some jeweller could be persuaded to make a run of these?

Horus cuff links here too:

$24.95 for Sterling Silver.

That link was posted in the thread below:

The discussion on the horus and the subsequent source was discussed in detail on the above thread.

Thanks, All.

It was one of those things where you wonder if it's been covered or not.

Again,
Thanks.

On an additional note... Has anyone taken notice of Indy's cuff on his shirt? It's rather interesting.

Not the standard french cuff as I know them. I might have to kick this over to the Fedora Lounge for more information.

No, those aren't folded like French cuffs. They look like plain starched cuffs which could mean 1) that the shirt is a simple, off-the-rack-prop shirt (likely), or 2) the shirt is a light-weight one, intended for warmer climate use. The double folded fabric in french cuffs add a bit of bulk and might be uncomfortable in more tropical settings.
Either way, good eye, Pyro!

That is an odd looking cuff. Certainly not a French style. It looks like someone modified a regular shirt cuff to utilize a cufflink.
Has anyone ever seen a cuff like this before?

Another observation, the cuff is upside down in the picture...

 Not the cufflink though. ;)

Anyways. To me it looks like a standard dress shirt cuff, only with less material so that it doesn't create a tear drop shape. (Not sure how to describe it better.) My guess is that the parts of the cufflinks are connected with a chain to keep the cuffs rounded, or at least are connected in a rather bent shape.

Whick reminds me, I still haven't heard a word on the outcome of these from my contacts. If people would like brass and nickel instead of gold and silver, my guess is they could be made for a pretty decent price if enough people are interested.

Should a poll be started perhaps?

The actual prop seems to have a rounded beveled edge or a semi circle cross section where the Skystone and silver version is just pierced sheet metal with etched lines.

I'd rather have a cast version than a pierced metal one.

Yes, I think a cast version would also be cheaper than the pierced one. I'll look into it asap.

Furthermore, is anyone able to get a few more screens as crisp as possible to speed it all up? ;)

Hi again!

The first company just got back to me. The price will be about $29 a pair if 20 pairs are ordered. A little steep perhaps?
I'm still awaiting a few more to get back to me. Stay tuned.
I still might need a few more screen shots though, and some nice guesses of what the measurements are. ;)

Can anyone see if there is a crystal on the eye. It might be nice to get them made with a little recess and to source a Swarovski crystal to go there.

Bufflehead;
Nothing at all, but it will be more expensive.
I have a pair of cufflinks made like this for a club I'm in, background in dull brass and letters in polished brass, and they look great.
I just figured that this would be the cheaper alternative, and that people would find it good enough. It's what I'm going for, anyway.

I am interested if I can know the diameter of the design in advance. If it is much more than a quarter, it will be too large. Do you know the size?

Thanks.

No problem, guys. Hopefuööy this one will go all the way.
I don't have a clue on the exact measurements and would need some good guessing, and a size we all could agree on to fit our needs.

Still waiting for some replies, and I might need some good sketches.

Yes, I drew that little pic. I used a screengrab to make the outline and superimposed the detailing upon it... did it at work in a hurry, I could make a better one if you'd like.

As far as size goes, I guess one could always extrapolate the size of the cufflink by comparing it to the shirt cuff and jacket sleeve.

Post by Feraud »

Here are a pair of brass dragon cufflinks I have. The quarter is added for a size comparison.
Image
Image
They are approx. 1 inch by 1/2 inch. This size might be a bit small for our needs. Does anyone have an idea of the size of Harrison's cufflinks?

Note the back of my link closes with the standard lever. The second photo posted by Scandinavia Jones shows a different closure. I think I have seen these before. The front of the cufflink is attached to an oval disk on the back by a chain.

Hope this helps.

The pair I have from a company I'm waiting to hear back from has that closure, which is probably the cheapest version but very functional I think.
These cufflinks were a bit cheaper than the $29 the other company mentioned...
Hopefully, we will seal the deal on this before November at least. ;)
Once I have the price definite I'll start a thread once again to see who's interested, with the names from this thread added.

I still might need some help on what you think they should look like though.

The closure is fine as is, imho. I have never had a problem with them.
I am happy with the sketch on the photo that Pyroxene attached. The lines are 'pleasing to the eye'. :)

I think we have to consider the size? Too big might look gaudy. The cufflinks in my photo are 1" x 1/2". That might make a good size.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for the effort being put into this piece!

Feraud I agree that too big would look gaudy. I also think that your dragoon cufflinks would be a good size. Large enough that you cant tell what the design is, but no so large as to make it gaudy.

Well, folks.
The other company just got back to me. They are cheaper a pair, but the minimum order is 100 pieces. Calculations to cover the costs for 20 pairs would then make them a tad more expensive anyway, and I'm not the kind of guy who would then sell the rest on eBay for a price way over the manufacturing costs. I have therefore decided to go with the first company, a well reputed gang by the name of "Svenska Medalj", Swedish Medal that is.
If everyone is OK with it, I'll try and see if the can make the attachement mechanism with a chain and a small plate, the way I think it looks like from the screen shots. When the final drawings are done and an estimated price is once again added, I'll start another thread to see who is still interested. The more people who wants a pair, the cheaper they will be.

Was there any option to have them gold plated? Brass would need to be laquered wouldn't it?

I haven't asked since I figured it would be too expensive. I'm gonna ask for "shiny brass" and let them do their magic. The other pair I mentioned earlier has both dull and shiny parts, and they are all brass. I'm sure they'll look good. ;)

KT
Brass does oxidize and thus darkens over time. However, brass is easily buffed to a shine with a soft cloth and very little effort, or you can simply use a cleaning solution like Brasso. You could apply shellac to slow tarnishing. Shallac can be removed with alcohol. Gold plating ***** unless it's an expensive high quality "hard gold plating." Regular gold plating will wear off rather quickly. I'd be interested in a pair of those cuff links, but I don't have a shirt without buttons on the cuffs. In case you guys need one more person to get the minimum order filled, let me know and I'm game.

Cheers,
