Why not Deerskin?

Why not Deerskin?
Besides the fact that deer aren't raised for leather.. I know several deer hunter's although I would never think of shooting one. I mean I've found a great pair of deerskin gloves, they are black and have a stretchy quality about them. The grain and overall character is amazing, better than the goatskin gloves I have (which have very nice grain too). It's not "buck skin" or suede but a finished surface. So why is there not any leather jackets in this material, it seems comperable to Lamb in strength, but I'm not really sure. I think it would make an awsome Indiana Jones jacket if one could have enough of it Tanned. What do you think?

It was done by Gibson and Barnes when the first Expedition jacket was created. I owned one. Problem they had with the deerskin was that it continously relaxed, so the sleeves just kept getting longer and longer, and the overall jacket just sagged on the body instead of draping correctly. It was the most comfortable leather I've ever worn, and in ALL types of weather and temperatures, but it wasn't at all water resistant, and VERY suseptable to absorbing odors. You wore the jacket in a Mexican restaurant, and you SMELLED like the restaurant for a week or more Heaven forbid you spilled gasoline on it!!!
It lasted on the FS stock offering for about a year or so, then was removed as it was not a very good seller for the reasons listed above.

...or used an outhouse. I have enough trouble dealing with cigarette smoke odors. My biggest problem with buying a used leather jacket is the odor. Mold or smoke.Michaelson wrote:You wore the jacket in a Mexican restaurant, and you SMELLED like the restaurant for a week or more Heaven forbid you spilled gasoline on it!!!

What's the difference between buckskin and deerskin? We're doing a western for the fall play and I'm playing the lead. He's described as wearing a pair of old boots and buckskin jacket. I was thinking of just distressing mysoon-to-arrive lambskin jacket and passing it off...I think I have too much dignity to wear one of this fringe-fest suede jackets.
