THE grey color found!

Post by Marc »

Hey all,

guess what? - The grey hat on the clipper plane is.... brown

Ok, ok. Here's what I found out: on the BROWN color chart of my felter, there's a color sample that I personally would have considered to be grey (I got both their grey and brown color charts). To ME it is rather a brownish grey then a greyish brown, but it is CERTAINLY an EXACT match to what we see on screen. Once Steve receives his color charts, I'm sure he'll agree.

Now whether the hat on the plane WAS grey or brown... I don't want to discuss. Only thing I'm saying is, that what we SEE on screen can be optained from this felter in an extremely high quality.

Regards,

Marc

I can get a color that matches the one seen on screen perfectly. Whether it's grey or not is up to you

MArc, regardless of the actual tone of this felt, would you agree that it was not the color used for the main fedora, meaning whether or not it was brown, they provided a second hat color for the Clipper scene?

That is what I believe, yes. If I ever doubted that, this color sample made me "a true believer"

This felter seems to have some incredible choices. I would like to see this. I just ordered a gray hat from Steve because I liked his current gray color. I am happy to see these exciting developments with Adventurebilt.

That is an interesting take on the old Clipper hat discussion: instead of proving whether that hat was brown or gray, simply prove it was a different hat from the main brown hat and go on from there. Interesting.

What has always caused the color confusion was Richard Swales terminology. He ALWAYS referred to it (or them, since he made two) as 'his gray felt'. Brown, gray, what ever....that's what HE called it, and folks have taken it verbatim, which (as Marc has stated very well) isn't really correct if you're wrestling with screen accuracy color. The best description is that the hat in question is NOT the same color or tint as the 'hero' hat throughout the movie, and it's THAT color that several folks have been chasing for so many years. (Including me!!!!)

Steve's standard brown/gray is just beautiful. I received my ordered version about a month ago, and it's a homerun. If the lightweight felt that Marc is looking at as the source for the new lightweight AB is dead on in terms of coloration, then as far as I'm concerned, I've finally reached the end of that search.....and it's been a LONG road to get here, gentlemen!!

I tip my fedora to you both, and to all who have argued and debated this question, regardless of WHAT side of the debate you fell. It's folks like you that keep this hobby interesting and fresh for old fogies like me, and I really and SERIOUSLY appreciate it.

My HIGHEST regards!!

As I stated in the Adventurebilt Deluxe thread: it can be any weight you'd like to old friend! They make them from Optimo thin and up to... well so thick that you'd sweat when wearing it at the north pole

Bink, was that serioulsy ever an issue? Did someone honestly think they were the same hats? Seriously?

Marc, that's good news. Until recently I always saw they hat as grey until Texas Jones made me look more closely. It's cool that we can at least get what some see on the screen and good to be able to get solid greys for those who still want them.

To answer you, yes, a while back many folks honestly thought they were.

I never thought the Clipper hat was the same as the hero hat, but I felt most people were arguing that it essentially was. Sure, it wasn't a distressed one, but I think a number of people think the Clipper hat is the same color as the hero hat. I disagree with that. Especially after doing window light tests with every fedora I own (and there are a bunch of them in different colors and shades!) I believe the Clipper hat was grey with brown overtones. I think it's the same hat used at the end of the movie on the stairs, too. In my opinion it's not the same color as the hero hats, whether or not it's a brown hat with grey tones or a grey hat with brown tones.

I guess if you really think about it, that'd be the same thing. Right? :D Same exact hat, just your preference on how you wanna word it.

See, who says we can't all be happy!

As I’ve said on other forums and here before, I’ll ENTERTAIN the notion that it’s a light brown fedora because I’ve seen what artificial light can do to the color of some material, especially to well worn felt.

I’ve been in places were florescent light turned the appearance of my brown fedora into gray and the grosgrain band into a more copper color.

But, Ford was wearing a suit that would have gone better with a gray fedora. I don’t think anyone would wear a brown fedora with a blue suit if that character were popery dressed by the costume department.

I’ll rest my case that the color is open to interpretation.

   It's all about the happiness factor. I personally think it's a grey hat since the greyer hats that I "tested" turned out to produce this effect more so than the obvious brown ones. The exception was the light brown felt. But I also agree that a grey hat would/should be used with a dark blue suit. Again, I also think the Clipper hat was the same hat used at the end of the movie, and the hat in that scene looks more obviously like a grey hat, especially since the lighting is consistant.

Any word on the felt samples, Marc?

Not really Bink,

the brown color chart is just twelve pieces of different colored rabit felts glued on a cardboard...
