Which color hide do you guys think is more screen acurate? Dark Brown or Authentic brown?
well....screen accurate is the authentic brown since that's the colour of hide Peter used in Raiders. He found a spare jacket while moving shops and has since matched the hide, calling it "authentic".
But television/theater accurate is another thing. The lighting whenever the jacket is shown is pretty poor, giving off an almost black look. If that's your thing, then dark brown may be the choice for you.

I've got to say the authentic brown. Its a color that you really have to see to appreciate. It can go from looking near black to a much lighter brown color. To my eyes, it is what I see on screen. Now I admit when I ordered my Wested I debated over the color issue also. But now that I have the authentic brown there is no doubt to me that it is the correct color.

Just a suggestion:
Maybe you (or another member) could post some side-by-side pics (or links) to aid in the voting:
I'm interested in outside lighting pic comparison shots - plus maybe indoor medium lighting pics, etc.
Regards,
P.S.> Does Wested offer multiple color options in Goat also?
(I like the toughness of Goat myself)

Here you go Spooky.
Authentic Brown goat on a very clear sunny spring day.
Authentic Brown goat on a somewhat overcast hazy day.
Note* Pic #1 is the acception, not the rule. Rarely does the jacket appear that light. By the end of the day I had gotten the jacket quite dusty. I must say it looked very good.

Its funny - I have a dark brown goatskin and it is IDENTICAL to an authentic brown goatskin - the only way to tell them apart is to try distressing them and only the DB distresses. I guess it depends on the particular batch of hide as well - it sometimes get mistake for lamb too cos its quite thin as well.

Yes, this is kind of an odd poll, but go for it. Considering that Peter Botwright himself found a non-completed Raiders jacket in his back room when they moved, and sourced and exactly matched a lambskin supplier to his in- hand example, then called it 'authentic lambskin' to separate it from his standard dark offering, I'd say, as Buff says, it's pretty much a no brainer....then that's just me and my strange point of view.

You really think so? In the actual photos, the jacket in the first pic looks "medium" brown and the jacket in the second pic looks black.Kt Templar wrote:Those 2 link colours are pretty close!J_Weaver wrote:Here you go Spooky.

Well, it doesn't matter, they call it authentic brown for a reason.

I agree. This is kind a trick question. My first answer is authentic brown, as thats what it was, what I have and what it looks to me on the extras footage.Indiana_Tone wrote:Well, I guess I misinterpreted the question; which looks more screen accurate for which is the authentic color of the jacket.
It could be that my eyes need color correction but in Raiders, the jacket to me, looks very dark throughout the film.
However...
The jacket ONSCREEN in Raiders has always *looked* more dark to me, almost a flat black at times. This must be due to film and lighting as we KNOW its authentic brown. But its enough to cause me to want to buy another Wested in dark Brown and (close your ears Michaelson) distress it.
So in a way both answers are acceptable IMO.

I must have been tired it was the URL links I was commenting on. For some reason one was dark brown one was light I thought you had done something clever with the colours!
As for the pics, they show the "looks dark chocolate in one light", "looks milk chocolate in bright light" that is classic authentic brown.
Best regards,
KT
I'm with Tone, for various reasons, including onscreen colour and a certian young lady's jacket, my next Wested will be a dark brown goat to go with my authentic brown lamb. (and then after that.....).

OK, theory.
Aside from the fact that Authentic Brown is just that...AUTHENTIC, consider this;
If in the film because of lighting the jacket, despite being Authentic Brown it looks Dark Brown on screen...
...& if Authentic Brown has a chocolate sort of colour in person (speaking from the fact I have an Authentic Brown Goatskin), but in certain lighting conditions (see Weavers second pic) looks Dark Brown...
...then if the Dark Brown looks like the movie jacket appears ON SCREEN & it looks Dark Brown in the same certain lighting conditions (face it, it can't get any dark in colour, although it can look Black, which again is what some people through the Indy jacket was originally)...
...then Dark Brown is the better jacket to have the screen image look all the time, in person & in certain lighting conditions???
Is anyone still with me on this?

I might also add, that if you are ever in the Smithsonian Museum or somewhere else, and find yourself in the presence of a screen used jacket and happen to be wearing your authentic lamb Wested, you will never again wonder about the color of the jacket.
These questions about the jacket will never again enter your mind. If someone else ever asks you this question, you will simply answer, "authentic brown" and walk away mumbling to yourself like Michaelson and me.

Its the same with the shirt - what might look tan in real life looks much lighter on screen. So do you get a shirt that is actually accurate to what the shirt looked like in real life (therefiore tan) or do you get a shirt which looks accurate to how the shirt looks on screen? For most people I think screen accuracy comes down to wearing what looks accurate to what people see on screen - howevever the flip side of this then is if you film or photograph it, the color could potentially be off.Skippy wrote:OK, theory.

Yeah, I'm with you Skippy. I also have to agree with Tone's first post and Alabama, however I've never seen any Wested in person so I ordered some samples of authentic and dark lamb and goat to compair in person.Skippy wrote:OK, theory.

J_Weaver,
Just wondering, were those digital or scaned photos? The quary shot has a very bright background so everything was probably over exposed in that shot, thus the lighter color. And if it was a photo print, they probably had to do some adjustment at the photo lab. I've seen several photos, even lighter looking than yours. They look kind of "milk chocolaty brown". I think those are mostly with the flash. I could handle authentic if it only varried in the range that's shown in your photos.

Doc,
The Photos are scaned. I don't have a digital camera yet.
I agree, most of the pics that make the jacket look really bright is due to the flash. As we all know, cameras do some strange things to colors. Check out this pic. It was taken the same day, in the same lighting. Note how dark the jacket looks. IMO, if you want a truely screen accurate jacket, the the Authentic brown is the way to go.

You know, until I started reading this forum about two years ago, I always thought the Raiders jacket was black cow hide! That is what my mind saw on the big screen and TV.
BTW,
Anyone know the color of the jackets used by Alan Ladd from CHINA and Charlton Heston in SECRET OF THE INCAS? Were these black or brown. Guess it would be hard to tell if the movie was black and white....

It seems i'm one of the few FEW people choosing dark brown. I have in my mind this picture of indy at the beginning of riders where the jacket looks very very dark (i know, the south american enviroment was dark), so to me indy's jacket is dark brown and i wouldnt like an authentic brown, it wouldnt look very indyesque to MY eyes.[/u]

Exactly why I want to have some phiscal samples before I get one as I also want it dark as on screen in person.Pagey wrote:I have a Raiders authentic brown lambskin and I really regret that I didn't opt for dark brown. Although my jacket often looks really good in photos, I just don't like the look of it in real life. Not only is the brown too light for how I percieve the Raiders jacket - it's also a boring kind of brown. Chocolate basically. So although it's the "authentic" colour, I personally wish I didn't have it.
I've got a US Wings lamb that I really like the color of for everyday ware, it's got a nice redish tint to it, thus making it more of a Last Crusade jacket and not Raiders as I would like. I've even gotten a few complments on the color of it and how it looks good on me. (in person) I don't think the authentic would look as good on me, or maybe even the dark as neither are as rich as this one. Hmm...maybe I should go for the LC look instead...

Yea, me too. The color varation is the only reservation I have about the horsehide. Although, the only jackets with the red tint were the early ones like Rob's. The newer ones like Bjones' has a pretty uniform color to it.Indiana_Tone wrote:I'm slightly concerned about the hit & miss on the dye for the horse, though. As with most of the coloring, it varies with lighting. Mine is probably closer to the authentic shade, but in interior lighting its almost black.

Pagey, the ONLY reason you haven't sold it because of the size. You need to EAT more, boy! How do you exact us fat guys to fit in a jacket that small?!Pagey wrote:Tone, yes I find the authentic brown kind of boring. It seems a rather flat colour without any depth if that makes sense. I enjoy wearing the jacket but I try not to look at my arms! When I see the colour close up I don't like it. In photos and from further away ( I sometimes let my wife wear it if she's cold) it looks great. And I have tried selling it!!! I seem to be stuck with it. On a positive note - the lamb is developing a wonderful natural distressing on top of my hand-distressing. Cycling in all weathers has really done wonders to the surface of the leather!

Have to agree with Pagey. My Authentic Goat is a great jacket, but having seen the pics of Elodie's jacket, I know I've got the wrong colour (& the wrong skin, for other reasons too)
That said, I'd like to see the Horsehide offered in Authentic Brown, as in a completely unauthentic way, I'd like a Horsehide jacket that distresses & reveals a nice reddish brown lighter colour
