Getting that Raiders bulge

Post by Dakota Ellison »

Simply fold the crown at the top of the ribbon, all the way around. When you unfold it, voila, le bulge. You must already have a good block with no taper.

My hat gets the bulge just from wearing it kind of tightly. Happens every time I wear it.

Oh, we're talking hats! ... had me worried there for a minute.

... sorry, fighting off the lunchtime food coma and getting a bit punchy.

But yes, as with 5, if I put on my too-small HJ, instant bulge.

I don't think that's possible. It's the tight fit of the hat that gives it the slight bulge. Maybe Fedora can chime in and tell us if there is a way to block it so that it will have that effect when at normal or less of a fit.

You guys talking about the bulge on the Cairo hat? Mushroomed? That is from the hat being pushed down from the top, and the nature of the felt lets that distortion stay in. Dakota's way would work, and Pagey's sitting remark would work too. The felt has to be pretty pliable and not the springy type you see on many modern hats. Fedora

That's a good idea, I never thought of that. Here's my "string" method, which got the mushroom effect (er, bulge) nicely:

It's the HJ I got in February from Todd. An unfinished Poet, it has never had stiffener and has been slightly reblocked and the brim cut with me playing Richard Swales.

So you just push down on the crown and stop at the ribbon? is that correct?

Fold the part of the crown the ribbon covers up, like a sailors cap. I pushed the top of the crown down to meet the fold, but I didn't have to. By the way, pushing the top down left the crown with a faint line around it when I pushed it out, as though it had once been a pork pie crown. Hmmmmm..........

Dakota,
I have this strong urge to jump through the screen and start bashing that HJ.
