Maltese Falcon Bogey
After trying to copy pics sent to me of the Bogey hat, here is what I came up with. Now, I was gratified to find that Bogey had the tight pinch on his at too, at least at the top. Check it out. Jim, your Bogey is on its way. Fedorahttp://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/bogey2.html

What are the specs? Beaver? Ribbon height? Crown? Brim? Curious minds
First, thanks for the compliments. This is he Raiders gray beaver felt. Ribbon width is 2 inches, and the brim is 2 5/8. On the creased height, I do not know. I just looked at the pics Jim sent and tried to copy them. If my felt was just a bit thinner, I could have nailed that top crease. I do think if I would have softened the felt up, it would have had a softer look on the top. That is the only weakness that I could see. Fedora

I got that image from someone who emailed it to me to post here. A lurker, I think, as I did not know the person. I asked him the history of the pic ,but never heard from him again. Pagey thought it was faked. Is that the consensus of most folks here? I thought it looked rather genuine. FedoraWhere did you get this image of Harrison in the grey hat?

I think this needs to be posted over on the "Indy Greys" post. Is it faked? I don't know. If it is, it is a good one. It certainly answers the questions definitively if it is not. Does the suit match up to what is in that scene? If so, it would lend some credence. That little girl's haircut sure matches up to 1981; that whole "Dorothy Hammil" look. The focus is definitely set on the figures in the foreground, and it was a nice camera with an apperature setting set for portraits. A point-and-shot couldn't do an image like that. It sure looks like it was taken on set to me. I've seen a million similar images of some lucky person who is posing with a star on set.Fedora wrote:I got that image from someone who emailed it to me to post here. However, it could be two distinct images. There is something strange going on with the right side of his ribbon. and the white of the gentleman behind him with his suit, looks a little strange. Still, the foreground pic could be right, but the background could have been added later.
I think this picture might need its own thread. It is an amazing image!

I found the picture on a website dedicated to the aircraft behind Ford and Ms. Carol.
That's all I could find.

Thats a good point Hemingway. To me it looks like Indy and the girl have been placed on the background. But I'm no expert, so I may be wrong.Hemingway Jones wrote:I wish you fellows would render opinions based on something. It's real, it's not real, but why? Based on your knowledge and experience, why did you reach your conclusion? Thank you.

That definitely looks like the outfit Ford wore in the final staircase scene in Raiders. That photo looks like the quality photo done by a professional photographer, and not a snapshot type made by someone with a point and shoot camera. I believe it's real from what I can see in the shading and the sharpness of front image to rack out focus of the images in the background. You almost have to use a macro setting on your lense to achieve this effect, and it's done all the time with high end still cameras and element adjustable lenses in 120 format. Regards! Michaelson

I don't want you to get me wrong, Steve. I personally think we should be able to post these sorts of things here for the sake of the whole community who may be more than interested, but the mods have made it perfectly clear in the past that threads not pertaining to Indy gear or the films are off-topic and not for this site. I myself as well as many, many others have had threads shut down for this very reason which I've come to respect. I was politely trying to point out how this thread is remenicent of past threads that have been shut down and we even have mods posting on it. HOWEVER, as I said, I find nothing wrong with your bringing this hat to the attention of the board except that an exception was made in the rules where in other cases, it was not. Yes, it did get sorta moved to an Indy related thread, but I wanted to voice my opinion on the matter, which as many of you know, I've been known to do from time to time.
Hey, I know that alot of the gearheads are interested in this hat and that you are now THE go-to guy for Indy hats. I wish you luck with the new Bogie even though I know you don't need it cuz' you'll be selling the heck out of them. It looks great! Hope there are no hard feelings here. Nothing personal at all, just looking at the big picture. I'd have posted the same response had it been someone elses thread.

Let's clear something up, agent5, there are precedents for this type of posting. We have allowed vendors and individuals to post items that were made and/or sold by gear vendors of Indy items. We've had discussions of jackets made by Wested, but for other movies. We've had whipmakers who make Indy whips for us discuss whips they've made for other movies. There have been no problem with this happening, as there's been at least a link, thin as it may be, back to the original Indygear point of view. This loosening up of these type posts was done when MK was webmaster, and hasn't changed since Abner and Mike took charge.
The strings that cause problems are those that come completely out of left field and have absolutely NO connection to an Indy vendor what so ever. Those will continue to be shut down, or at least questioned by the moderators. We even allowed your topic that you created when the Chicago Convention took place to continue to it's conclusion. It had nothing to do with Indy at all, but just the fact that you and several others were going there in gear represented the very hobby, and therefore was left intact. The same goes for other conventions that are posted here...eg., all the Star Wars stuff. They were eventually deleted, but were given time to get info out before being shut down. If you'll recall, those type posts were never allowed prior to MK's change of policy. You also know he was the one that introduced that policy, as you were involved with the recent one where he started discussing the Casablanca plane in the middle of the Disney Well of Souls string. Things are a lot looser in that respect, and have been for some time.
So, this particular string, though not Indy connected, isn't a first, and shouldn't cause anyone heartburn. If it does, I'm not sure why, as it's been done many times to date and there have not been any complaints. Why now?
I hope this helps clear the air. If not, please contact me offline and we'll try and clear things up.
Regards! Michaelson

picture of IJ and friend
As an ameteur photographer I am always interested in controversial shots like this one.
It is not a bit unusual to use fill flash when outdoors. It causes the subject (IJ and friend) to "pop" and subdues the background.
jeboat
BTW that Bogie is my hat!!!
