I just had a 20 minute battle!

Post by crazylegsmurphy »

So I was sitting here, watching a little Conan O'Brian, and suddenly a moth barrels through the window. Well, this instantly made me go, "My hats!" and jumped up to catch the would be wrong-doer!

I don't like killing animals if I can avoid it, so for the last 20 minutes I have been chasing him "lovingly" back out the window....

I tell ya...I do love my Adventurebilts! :D

Actually, I usually catch them out of mid-air with my hand and then throw them out the door and they fly off. My wife says that she can't stand touching them. I do wash my hands after I toss it out the door.

But they have powder on thier wings, and if that powder gets knocked off they can't fly. Or at least that is what I remember. At least you don't squish them...thats cool! :D

Wrong kind of moth fellows. You have nothing to fear from this critter. Cloth moths, now that is another thing. Oh, the moths that lay their eggs and let their progeny eat the hat, look nothing like what we call moths. Check em' out. http://www.bizzybees.com/bugs/ClothMoth.aspFedora

Are these cloth moths a little smaller or a lot smaller than what we typically call a moth (like the one crazylegs was trying to herd out the door).

The site says the adults are 1/2 inch long.
I have seen varying size moths in my area. They are probably a "typical" moth length.

Since I'm a collector of historical uniforms, moths are my natural enemy. I use moths' marbles to protect my uniforms for beeing eaten, but I guess that won't help much in here

A comerade collector of mine use to gas his collection twice a year, kind of spooky

Anyway, cloth eating moths should be killed by every canche! Don't give them the canche to survive!

@erri-wan: that's allmost the exact picture of a moth which is in my mind

Fedora clarified that common moths pose no threat to our hats.
It is that 'other' one we have to watch out for! :)

The powder thing is why Mrs. Bufflehead says she can't stand to touch them. I never feel anything on my hands, but that is why I wash my hands anyway. You know what a cautious fellow I am.

When I toss them out the door, I can see that they fly off allright, so I guess it didn't affect them.

It absolutely blows my mind how a thread like this can get so many replies, yet when a thread with actual merit is posted (IE: My Comic-Con threads, with loads of pics), it has to fight and struggle to get responses.

BLOWS MY FREAKIN' MIND.

I am guessing it's cloth moths that eat little holes in the hat, is that correct?

Somebody mentioned sliverfish were also a problem.

Honestly, I don't think there's be a through report on what bugs dammage hats and such on this forum. It would also be good to know what prevention measure to take for long term storage.

Cheers,
Pyro.
