Australia IndyGear

Post by Dre »

Hey Guys,
I'm from Australia (Melbourne to be exact) and i know a few of you are also from here. I've been wondering if there any good places around melbourne to pick up a decent indy-like bag, belt, or other such gear at affordable (or...cheap? hehe) prices. Like say a bag for under AUS $20?

Oh and also...after ordering my jacket from wested last week! (exciting!!) i've started looking into getting a hat as well...but i really don't want to be spending over AUS $100. though preferably as little as possible. What's the likelihood of finding them in op shops and such?

I think that Australia used MkVII's so you should be able to find a bag from a surplus store.

You could get an Akubra, they are $101.5 AUD. http://www.hatsdirect.com/cgi/products. ... turnpage=0

Thanks to The Internet, all shops are now local shops. Just takes longer to get them via the mail.

These guys have some - though not online. They are called a "Gas Mask Haversack" and go for like 10 bucks. Very simple, yet close to a MKVII. One of the members, Merrick, pointed them out about a year ago.

Dre,

In terms of a hat, I think it's pretty hit and miss. When I first got into this hobby I searched op-shops for a hat and never found anything remotely similar. I found a few fedora style hats in ghastly faded tan's and such, all had tapered or had very small brims. No good at all. You may be lucky, especially given the size of your city and population, I'm sure you'll have a better chance.

The bag - same deal, I think all Australian MKVII's were tan coloured like the Canadian ones (Swindy correct me if I'm wrong). I have only ever found one at a surplus store, and for some reason it was very brittle and fell apart when handled. I searched all surplus stores I know of in S.A. and a few in country Vic. (Bendigo, Ballarat, Echuca and such) and have never seen another. I think the on-line vendors like WPG are your best shot. WPG has genuine ones again as well as the replicas. Mine came from Ebay. One was around $30 (a tan Canadian one - which I dyed green) and a 'normal' one which I think I paid about $80 for. I realise in hindsight I paid too much, but then I was new at this and hadn't done enough homework. And then I ended up wrecking it through stupidity, but that's another story.

The one that Texas Jones' is talking about is a good bag for the price, but takes a bit of modification to make it more Indyesque. It is, for want of a better term, a representation, of a MkVII. I used mine for rough stuff, when I didnt want to damagew my orginal MkVII. (I now use my MkVI for this though)

Anyway that's my story of gear in Oz. As Ren said the internet does make all stores local stores, and thus that is the way I was forced to go.
However, as I said, Melbourne is pretty big, you never know what you'll find in the big city.

Depends on the scene I guess, but I think the general consensus here is that its usually a dirty green colour.

Screen caps anyone?

Hmm actually i just chucked in the raiders dvd and it is indeed olive green. it's funny how we alter our perceptions and memories and beleive something is different to what it actually is.
