reattaching a liner

I'd like to reattach the liner of my new fedora. My giver had removed it for a reason I just cannot recall.

how do I go about reattaching it? What do I use?

You can do a couple of things. You can get some thread and tack it in place by hand, hiding the stitches under the hat ribbon, but this may be difficult, depending upon how dense the felt is and how easy it is to push a needle through it. You can also use a small spot of Elmer's glue in a couple places, if I recal this correctly. Whereas Akubra used a hot glue gun which leaves a mess on the inside of the hat, Elmer's is water based, meaning it could be removed with a little water if need be.

Enjoy your hat! I think it's great one showed up on your doorstep. The kindness of COW never ceases to amaze me.

thanks bink. when using tyhe glue, should I glue it to the crown at all--I am thinking here of the area near the bash. ON secodn thought, I guess not, since you want to be able to rebash and form. so how far up on the crown should one glue? Or does one merely glue around the sweatband only?

Actually the thread doesn't go all the way through the felt, so even if you'd remove the ribbon, you shouldn't be able to see the stitches from the liner. The thread is IN the felt under the sweatband. Takes a little practice, but worth it though. Be sure not to make to big steps. I recommend round about an inch per step, where as the thread "in the felt" is only a few mm.

Yeah, but I've had bad experiences with that and wouldn't recommend it.

With one inch between the stitches and a thin needle you'd hardly do any harm to the hats integrity. That little stitch would disappear during the next reblock, when submerged to hot steam anyway.

Shadwell, I read somewhere that you could use a small spot of Elmer's against the inside of the hat itself. Heck, Akubra uses a hot glue gun and puts it right on the hat itself. But wheres the glue gun spots are pretty permanent, Elmer's, being water soluable, should wash right out when it gets a cleaning and reblock. Besides a small dab of Elmer's, as opposed to a huge glob of it, shouldn't harm the inside of your hat one bit. Or, you try to tack it in as Marc suggests. He knows what he's doing more that I!

Thanks for the help follks. Stitching was just too intensive for me right now. Elmer came through fine.
