Measuring For My Indy Jacket???
First off I promise I searched, but I couldnt find quite what I was looking for
I was having some problems with measuring for my jacket, so i strolled on down to the local tux rental place (VERY nice guy great customer service from my previous experience) And after explaining the situations he did some quick measurments and found me to be a Chest size 38 with my sleeve size of 33 Inches, thats where my problem lies because on the Wested page http://www.wested.com/frsizing.html They have standard sizes and they have a 24 inch sleeve as the stantard size for a 38 inch chest???
So when i told him all about that (and explained how the page says to measure from the shoulder ) he said he dosent know of anyone who measures that way because its to vague??
Am i missing something Or is this a common problem??
Or perhaps should i just explain the situation to Them along with my measurements and let them figure it out??
Any help would be GREAT!!

Wested measures their sleeves from the seam on the shoulder to the first knuckle of your thumb and not from the middle of your back(which is how dress shirts are measured).
All I did was get someone to measure with a piece of measuring tape, while wearing a fitting jacket, from the shoulder-seam to the desired sleeve-length while my arm was bent.

Hey,
I also found it quite confusing the way Wested asks for measurements. Most of the time they ask for measurements from the neck, to the shoulder to the elbow of a bent arm to the wrist.
What I ended up figuring out is, on the Wested site you can see that the shoulder standard is about 6 inches or something like that. I think what they do is measure from the side of the neck to the shoulder, and then the shoulder (where the collar bone meets the shoulder bone) down to the wrist.
I made this little do-dad and sent it to them:
My jacket should be here on monday so I'll let you know then if my measurements worked out.
EDIT:
Here is Pretty much what I sent to them.
Hey Gemma,
Ok so I went and had myself measured, and here is what they came up with. (I have attached a fancy graphic to illustrate)
Chest – 42”
Shoulder/Wrist – 26”
Neck/Shoulder/Wrist – 36”
Neck/Waist – 18 ½
Neck(side)/Shoulder – 6 ¾
Shoulder Width – 16 ½
Waist – 41 ¾
Neck – 17 ½
Waist/Hips – 8 ½
Those are exact measurements so I’m not sure if you adjust those for sizing. I was thinking that a 44 long would be a pretty good fit as it says on your website that the following sizes are standard.
Shoulder – 6.85”
Sleeve Length – 26.25”
Back Length – 27”
The 44" should give me about 2 inches breathing room, is that good?
I’m not really sure how the jacket fits. Maybe a 27” sleeve would be a good idea, just to be safe? I was also thinking a 26” Back length would be awesome, but if that’s too much of a pain I would rather go longer (27”) than shorter to keep my shirts from peeking out.
I was also thinking about it (after reading a few posts on COW) and I think it would be cool to have the following features if it’s not too much trouble.
Cotton Collar
Last Crusade Style Snap Fasteners
X-BOX Stitching on Side Straps
Antique Brass D Rings
The rest I’ll leave up to you, as you are the experts. Let me know if there is any more information you need, or if you have any suggestions. Also, I’m very sorry if I seem picky, I am just so impressed by the jackets I have seen on the COW website, and I would like to be able to brag like they all do!
Thanks so much for your time,

all I did was take measurments from a jacket that fits me well, and my wested raiders jacket came out perfect.

j-weaver, you are correct. I shouldn't even try posting today (it's been a long couple of days). we got slammed at the firedepartment with calls the past couple of days.
I'll fix it up.

I'm going to bed now, it always takes me some time to get back on track to even get to sleep once again.
I just got myself measured by a tailor today, although this is what i got:
Sleeve Length - 55cm/21.65inches
Jacket Length - 42(w)-74(L)
Chest 51? - 102cm/40.1575inches
Shoulder - 24cm(x2?) = 48cm/18.898inches
And i know im around 168cm tall. (short i know but eh!)
I have no idea what the jacket length means...as ive done a quick measure of myself and both those numbers dont seem to be like what i want. i have a jacket that is a good length that im thinking i should measure the length of instead of this weird number i've got.
Also...the shoulder measurement i have is from shoulder to shoulder. Is that an acceptable measurement to give them (compared to just the one shoulder measurement?)
I figure ill probably need (roughly) a 40reg, except that my arms are a bit shorter than the standard sizing?

Dre, those #'s don't make any sense to me. The only meausrements that are vital are sleeve length and chest size. Wested also wants your height so they know how long to make the jacket.
The measurement that really seems odd to me is the chest size. Its says 51, then 40? The sleeve length sounds about right for a guy your height. If you have a suit that fits you well, then order that size or the next size up if you want room to wear a sweater. If not, you could always go out and try a few suit coats on. I wear a 44L and when I ordered my Wested I order a 46L so that I would have some extra room. It all came out perfect. I also suggest you call Wested and talk things over, if nothing else it will put your mind at ease.

the 51 was just written down. it could have been Si as in size though?
the chest is definetely 40. the shoulder span is from shoulder to shoulder which is 48cm..does that make sense?
The length of the jacket is what really confuses me though, but i might just send them a measurement of a jacket length that i own that i like (though if i order a ToD jacket would they add length to the one i give them?) How do they figure out the length of the jacket from your height though? Surely everyone has different porportions of torso (top half of body?) and legs? or are they just two different sizes?
though the main question i want to know is - would they make a size 41 for example? as i think 42 would be too big...i want a fairly close fitting jacket with a little room but not so much as to be baggy at all. would 42 be baggy in the slightest?

Ok, let me address these question one at a time.
1. The shoulder measurement sound about right.
2. Jacket length: I'm not sure what to tell you. I didn't specify a back length and my Wested ToD came out perfect. When I ordered it I really was expecting a jacket that fit like the Raiders jacket, but thats not what I got. I got just what I ask for, a ToD jacket.
3. Chest size: Yes, I'm sure Wested would make you a 41 if thats what you want. When I ordered my jacket I was lucky enought to be able to place my order with Peter. When I asked him about the fit the said, "It's not a wet suit, you know." What he was getting at was that if you order your normal size you will get a trim fitting jacket, but noting super snug. I'd say that a 42 would probably be a little baggy. A 41 might be a bit baggy. Since you don't want a baggy jacket then I reccomend you order your size, a 40.
The best thing to do is to figure out what you want, then place your order over the phone so you can discuss details like these with Wested. That's what I did, and I couldn't be happier with my Wested.
