Whip Picture

I thought I would post a picture that I thought came out pretty well and show how to take a cool photo with your whip. I had put my camera on a dresser with a 10 second delay on the shutter. Just before it clicked, I snapped my whip towards the lense. It creates an interesting effect. More are here.
Tell me what you think.
And yes, I realize it's not a good idea to snap a whip indoors.

Cool pic HJ. I tried cracking my 8' indoors. Didn't turn out too well...too many walls

Thanks ij and jpenman. Yes, cracking a whip indoors is not the smartest thing, but I was in the middle of moving furniture, so the space was pretty clear.

I love trying to do self portraits of whip cracking...
Its such a pain trying to figure out exactly how long to wait before you wind up and crack for the camera.

A few years back I attempted to get a good shot in my TV studio and
wound up with a series that gave me this:

I would push the shutter, count out loud how long it took for the flash to fire, run into place and crack the whip...

Sometimes I hate self timers!

Hemmingway, here is a similar style photo I took in Maine. The camera with the 10 second timer was on my trunk. From the looks of it, I may have needed a 20 second timer.

Set the timer;
run far enough away;
Crack the whip like a lunatic until the flash goes off;
Repeat fifty times;
Look at pictures to see that you are not even in the frame on most of them.

Maybe get one presentable picture.

Rick, that is such a cool pic. I see we are all using the same technique: put it on delay, count off the seconds and crack like a madman hoping you have something!

Yeah, I used the same technique too. Link. My camera beeps about twice a second and when it gets to 2 sec it beeps twice as fast and after a slight delay that was my cue to let'er rip.

I didn't have too much trouble getting a good action shot. Just got lucky on the timing the first time and keep doing it the same after that.

hahahah...this is hysterical. Like watching a dog try to catch it's tail...I have to go try this too!

But in case it helps anyone...I could have sworn one of the cameras I used to own had a setting for continuous shots, spaced 5 or 10 seconds apart. Seems like just letting a digital camera do this until full would be a lot easier.

Or is the obvious answer to do the same thing w/ a digital video camera and then just cherry-pick frames? Hmm...okay, time to go find that patch cable...

I am getting a dog in October ... my last one destroyed (AKA chewed beyond recognition) all kinds of stuff in his puppy stage ...
I will have to start locking up my whip & my Aldens soon.

p.s. ... and I thought I had time to kill on July 4th weekend.

LJ, I was scared I might break something, first and foremost, my camera! But, I didn't. I tried to control it. But, hey, I'm not married! I don't even have a girlfriend! I do have a female flat mate, so it does get a little confused at times.

Hey, thanks, She is 11 1/2, so she is out of the puppy stage, finally! Also, I have a large canvas, army-type bag hanging on the back of my door, where I keep my whip, so she can't get to it. You definitely have to be careful.

I've cracked a tripod.

Got me in trouble too.

Vinten Vision 12. About a $5-7K tripod...

Fortunately, it was a knob that cracked, and wasn't essential to the function of the sticks!

Oh the terrors of shooting broadcast news!

I'm STILL working on cracking microphone cables like a whip! The real trick is to put a microphone on the end of it, and see what happens when you accelerate an audio pickup device past the speed of sound.

ENOUGH!

I tried to get some pictures of my old 6 footer cracking, and my wife had a heck of a time trying to get a decent shot, (very fast whip, and a very slow digital camera.) So Hemingway and Rick have my appreciation for what they managed to capture.

Someday soon, I'm taking my video rig outside, bump my shutter speed WAY up to eliminate blurring, set it rolling, and crack my Strain at it for a while.
