Those of you who like the "Last Crusade" look...

Post by Strider »

I watched LC last night for fun, and I ended up noticing the hat this time around more than I usually did. I found that the hat looked very tapered in a lot of the scenes! There's several scenes where the hat looks good, though. I do like the way the pinch and hat overall looks in the scenes when we first see Walter Donovan, and toward the end, right before, and as Indy is going through the tests to get the grail.

However, I find that there are lots of scenes where the lid looks just as tapered as the cockpit scene from ToD. So, those of you who enjoy the "LC" look in their hats, do you prefer a stovepipe crown, with the LC pinch, and swoopy cowboy brim, or do you prefer it to look tapered, with a more relaxed pinch?

strider, I just love the way his hat looks in this pic. I tweaked my Herbert Johnson to look like this . When I get a chance I'll post it.

Among the listed alternatives I prefer this:
or do you prefer it to look tapered, with a more relaxed pinch?
I know taper is a 4-letter-word inhere, but it is also a part of a fedoras lifecyclus...

Best regards

I like this hat here. The high front pinch and curl in the brim gives the hat a little character. In some scenes the really relaxed pinch and flat brim makes the hat to plain. I also find the LC hat to be more dressy and more of a generic 30's fedora. Generally speaking its not as distinctive as the Raiders hat.

Now on to taper. Taper is fine in a low crown hat. However, taper in a tall crown fedora looks really bad IMO. It kind of gives you a cone head look.

I agree with J_Weaver one hundred percent. That pic is the epitome of the Last Crusade fedora. I modeled my HJ bash on that shot, and it's almost perfect.

My only problem with that particular version is the stingy brim. I use my hats in rotation, and on a daily basis. That brim, though making the hat look nice, is pretty 'non-functional' as a shelter from sun and rain. I've duplicated the style before, and it's one that no longer occupies a spot in my 'stable' of fedoras. Regards! Michaelson

Yea, I agree Michealson, the LC brim in general is too narrow for my liking. I'd love to get a LC AB from Fedora, but I'd still want the wider Raiders brim.

Oh please no! My LC Adventurebilt is so awesome you don't even know! The shorter brim is awesome and it makes the hat look so classy!

I mean the raiders is cool, but the LC style makes you look so slick! I have one of the sides curled more than the other (like Venice) and it looks really cool to me!

I'm not talking about looks. It does look fine. I'm talking about function, and this particular sized brim does not work for me. I am a BIG fan of the Venice dock version, though. Regards! Michaelson

I have to say, I really like the brim here. I styled my Adventurebilt's brim to look similar to that. I also agree with J_Weaver about this hat. I really think that is one of the scenes in which the hat looks awesome.

This though, this has to be my favorite look that the hat has in the entire movie. I don't know what it is about it, but I really like it.

In these scenes, though, the hat looks tapered, not so much like ToD, but a noticeable taper.

JPenman, that picture is the one we use in my store to sell Dorfman Pacfic Indy feds. #-o . The hat doesn't look tapered there, but the relaxed pinch, with the wider-than-ToD brim just doesn't jive well with me. For some reason, the relaxed pinch looks better, to me, with a stingy brim, a-la ToD.

So it's the overall "classy" look that you gents go for? I'm assuming these hats are stovepipe, and untapered?

I like this hat from LC. The brim has such a dramatic swoop and the crown is bashed with such a classic look. This is my favorite from this film.

Yeah, I'd say it's the classy look that I'd want in a LC lid. (if I ever get one that is)

My favorite Indy fedora in the whole series is the Venice Pier scene (see my avatar). That's what I ordered for my Adventurebilt. I just think it's the most elegant fedora I've ever seen..KC

When people ask me about the bash on my Adventurebuilt, I say it's pretty much "Raiders of The Last Crusade Temple" with something from each version....

The tall crown, the relaxed pinch, the wide brim...

Fedora's should be practical AND classy while at the same time fit the face and the head of the owner. I wear the same fedora from winter to summer, 365 days a year... and I find the wider brim offers the best protection.

There are some scenes where The LC is my favorate, and there are other scenes when I don't like it as much... I'm pretty fickle that way.

Is there a formula or something to tell if a fedora fits your face or is it just eyeballing it?
