It doesn't seem that the pinch is very defined, and it also looks like it has somewhat of a teardrop bash. I like its overall look, but I don't think it's all that much of an Indy lid. Congrats on your purchase, and thanks for sharing your photos! :D

Well Strider, that is the unfortunate thing with the straw. When it arived it had a center bash in it but it didn't look right. It's almost impossible to get the camel hump effect with the crown because the straw doesn't round out like the felt does. I had tried several times to shape the center bash with no luck. Plus when it arived the crown was so tall I looked like Abe Lincoln in a straw top hat. The pinch in the front is quite crisp though, so it at least has that. All in all I'm quite pleased with this summer hat. Thank you for your thoughts.

Cheers!

Sorry my friend, I don't. I had pulled it out of the box, ploped it on my head, realized I had the Abe Lincoln thing going on and proceded to turn the kettle on to steaming and shaping. I may try again later once I get a portable Jiffy Steamer to work with.

Cheers!

I am surprised that the straw can hold a pinch that tight. I thought that the straw would crack if you tried to pinch it very tight.

I would also like to see what one of these hats looks like right out of the box. I think this is the first one of these that I have seen that someone bought. If there are others out there with one of these hats, they haven't been sharing the pics.

I think it looks pretty good. I like straw hats, though I prefer Montecristis. This hat is a great color, a great shape, and has a great bow and ribbon. It would look great with IndyGear or with a summer seersucker or khaki poplin suit. Great buy and great hat. Wear it well.

Bufflehead Jones: You would be supprised at how supple this straw is. It gets even softer when a little steam is applied. once it cools down it holds the shape & the crease quite nicely without cracking. The Peter's Bros site has a good image of the hat but you can't guage how tall it is until you put it on. Sorry, I got too hasty in my reshaping of the crown. I hope that others will share their pisc as well my friend.

Hemingway: Thank you sir. I thought it might also look good with an ice cream suit as well. But yes, the khaki poplin suit would be ideal.
If you look in the last photo you can see how dark the jacket is.

That IS a nice looking hat. I know what I may get next time I down there.... :)

JP Design had a neat looking straw he made into an Indy look - but if I recall, he had to paint his to get it brown.

Looks like just the job for these hot Texas summers. Do they keep these in stock or are they a custom item made up to order? Either way, I may give them a call. I have an appointment near Fort Worth Wednesday afternoon and could plan to stop by beforehand and either pick up one or get a fitting.

The hats are on hand, but they're steamed into shape on a block, then the ribbon is applied before shipment. So, yes, and yes. (grins) Regards! Michaelson

Okay, sounds like I would need to allow for an hour or two then. I'll call them later today or tomorrow. It might be nice to have one with me when we hit the road this weekend for the annual trek to Mesa Verde N.P. in Colorado!

Gee, more stuff to buy. The process never ends, does it?

Cheers!

This is the straw Indy JPDesign did that MJ referred to. If I recall correctly, it's not a flexible hat, but yes I believe he said he dyed the hat brown.

Here I am wearing it, but it's a little big on me (about 3 sizes too big):

Just to update. I just heard back from Joe a few minutes ago, and he said he can turn one around in 2 weeks if he has the straw on hand, so definitely give him a call to confirm. Regards! Michaelson

Mine took about 6 weeks and a couple of follow-up e-mails. The hat is quite flexable. The front of the brim will flip up in a stiff breeze, and that same breeze will pass through. The leather sweat band is quite generous as well. This hat will be going to Disneyland this weekend, and I imagine that it will be at least in the 90°'s then. So this will be the acid test, and yes I'll post some pics and performance updates. So far so good to date.

Cheers!
