My new "Federation" is here!

Post by Wrightknife »

I just received my new Akubra Fedora yesterday and of course I am excited. I have read about the shaping and cutting, my question is, does everyone cut down the sides of the brim? If so does anyone have some diagrams or anything a little more descriptive than what I've read. I know to cut about 1/8" off of the sides and allow the front and back brim to remain the same width. I am somewhat nervous about cutting even though its only a $100.00 hat. Please let me know any helpful hints anyone has.

Thanks Wrightknife

The new Akubra's already come with a dimensional cut - both the standard and the duluxe. So that's already done. All you have to do with it is shape the brim and the crown. Oh, also be sure to enjoy it! :)

A "rookie" mistake.

 Yes, you are correct Minnesota! The difference was so subtle I couldn't tell without measuring. Sorry I clogged up the forum. Now I am looking forward to bashing and shaping when I get back from Destin in July. Thanks for correcting this newbie.

Wrightknife;

Don't you worry about it. There are so many threads around about shapes and styles that your head would spinn around 24-7 unless you had a good fedora on it to keep it in place. ;)

However, some people like to trim the brim a bit in case it looks and feels too big. (Pretty easy to take off the same amount of brim all around not having to worry about the dimensional cut, as the current main site says.)

My advice, as our own Renderking Fisk would say; Wear it a while until you are certain what you want to do with it, and welcome to the madness.

There are also some great tutorials out there in case you would ever want to make the bow a bit more "puffy" or "flying V", depending on what you'd like to go for.

Oh; PICS!, in case you are able to do it.

Regards,
Swindiana

Here is a good tutorial on bashing and cutting the brim: http://www.whyaxis.net/indy/hatshaping/hatshaping.html

And here is a nice ribbon tutorial: http://dalexs.whitvani.net/hat/hatpage.html

You're not clogging anything up. That's why we're here! :) Just didn't want to see you cut it before it was too late. I trimmed a fedora once..... once. It wasn't pretty. Let's just say I took "too much" off and that hat isn't worn anymore....

Absolutely! I have taken two already but I will have to try and sign up for a hosting site. I think I will try "photobucket". I have seen some on here using it. Stay tuned and I will post as soon as I can.

Congratulations on your new Fed!!
I've had mine for 2 years and all I can say is that it gets better looking with age and wear.
Don't be afraid of these hats, they can take anything you can throw at (or on) it.
Wear it in good health, and enjoy.

Oh, and by the way I didn't trim mine either.

Thanks Sheffield! By the way, I am from Russellville originally and had to move to South Georgia. I will definitely be enjoying the hat as well as the adventures that go with them.

Thanks Crazylegs!! I had turned off the flash because it was reflecting off of the ribbon and distorted the picture badly.

Thanks j-weaver for the info ( I tend to thank you alot ) :) You keep me well informed. Do you want to take a stab at what crown height that is in the pic? It look very tall.

No trouble, thats what pals are for!

I think it a 6" crown. My dad got a gray Federation last fall. I was surprised at how tall the crown was. :)
