That hat looks very sharp. I'd like to see more pics of it, with a better look at the front pinch. That bamboo is almost as thick as you are.

How much did the hat set you back?

Bamboo grows in Oregon? Did you have to import that? It's gorgeous (the hat that is...and so is the bamboo). Did you just recently get the Optimo? We don't hear of many Optimo reports these days.

I am also amazed at that bamboo. It's like a collonnade! The hat looks great also, except the hat is worn so far back on your head and it is so small in the picture, I really can't make out enough detail for a more specific appraisal. As acursory opinion though, it looks great and in a fantastic setting.

You need to cut your grass more often, FL. Looks like it's getting WAY ahead of you there...   Regards! Michaelson

So, FL, how long did it take you to find your way back out again? It looks good, from what I can see of it.

That does look like the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground at DisneyWorld. Any giant ants in there?

Well, bamboo is in the grass family so that does fit. There are over 1200 varieties so lots of them do well in the Northwest, as you can see. I got the Optimo several years ago. It cost at that time $350. plus 25.00 for shipping. It's a nice hat, but at the present time there are better options available for a lot cheaper price. Thanks for the compliments.

That's a great hat, but that bamboo is incredible! It looks like you are making your way to the Temple of the Forbidden Eye!

Do you build things with your bamboo?

No, although the possiblities are endless with it, I've always just grown it for the beauty of it and since I'm not in a position to go on any real expeditions, I can always pretend in my back yard. I like the back drop it provides for interesting pictures.

Great picture FL. If I hadn't actually seen bamboo growing up here in Seattle, I would swear that you were trying to ... well ... "Bamboo"-zle us. Sorry couldn't help myself. #-o :-#

I thought my dad had some large bamboo. It's a couple inches in diameter, but that stuff...wow!

It does grow increadably fast, but it gets bigger in diameter each season.

Bamboo grows it's full size in about 90 days or so, then it stays that size. Bamboo doesn't get bigger in diameter or height each successive year the way tree's do. The fastest actual recorded growth on record is 47.5 inches in 24 hours. Pretty amazing stuff. This picture was taken at night with a digital camera with a flash. The temperature range here in Eugene Oregon allows 100s of varieties to do well here. There are over 1200 varieties, some getting a foot or so in diameter and over 100 ft tall, and yes it will have grown that 100 feet in 90 days or so.

Is that 47.5 the diameter or the circumference? I'm just not sure how bamboo is measured.

I'm sure what my dad has wasn't allways as big as it is and has grown quite a bit over the years. Maybe it's some sort of cane and not bamboo?

Edit: yes, I found out tonight it's river cane not bamboo.

Holly, sorry I wasn't more specific. That was 47.5 inches in height. Thats almost 2 inches an hour going straight up.

Whoops I feel silly now. But 47.5 would be long/wide in either case for a 24 hour growth spurt. Yowsers!

BTW, great backyard ... I love it when folks make their backyard look tropical. I'm now bamboo inspired ... got this just recently:
