Theory time...

Post by Skippy »

OK, after all this talk of taper & seeing this pic of a reblock from Steve...

http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/som ... style.html

...it got me thinking.

I'm under the impression that for Raiders the HJ hats didn't arrive to the costume department in pristen condition, so they re-bashed them themselves at least.

Now, does anyone know if filming for Raiders started in Tunisia or not?

The reason I ask it this...
That pic of the hat reblocked by Steve, looks very much like the Raiders hat as J Weaver has pointed out, especially the Cairo hat. So what I'm wondering is...

What if the hat came from HJ looking like any other fedora, but took on the stovepipe look after a rebash in Tunisia?

Why Tunisia you ask? (...or not as the case may be  ) Well because, if you wanted a hat rebashed in Tunisia, I occurs to me you'd take it to these guys...

Image

The guy there is the most eminent Chechias maker in Tunisia. I was in his shop with him a few years ago, when his nephew made me a Chechias. But anyway, all their blocks for the Chechias are straight sided, flat topped wooden blocks, which would, to my limited knowledge, produce the Raiders stovepipe perfectly (I have a picture of my Chechias being steam ironed on the block. Soon as I get back from holiday I'll get it burnt onto CDROM & post it)

Just a theory (I stand by to be shot down in flames!), but it might explain why HJ Raiders block has disappeared, if infact it never exsisted!?! :-k

I think your theory is close, but I don't totally agree.

I think you might have rebash and reblock confused. A rebash is just reshaping the hat with your hands. A reblock like you were refering to means working the hat over a block. In the pic that has both of us amazed Steve simply rebashed the hat with his hands. He never put it on a block.

If I remember correctly filming started in Hawaii. So maybe the Cairo hat was the same hat that got dunked in the river at the begining of the movie. Maybe Ford or Noodlman(sp?) rebashed the hat to try to restore it to its original condition, thus giving us the Cairo hat. :-k

With that said here is another thought about the Cairo look. You can't get the Cairo look out of the box. You have to wear your hat, get it dirty, sweaty and let nature take her course, just like the hat in the pic.

:D

Well I did mean reblock, although I did misread Steve's post & didn't realise that hat was just steamed & rebashed  Impressive.

Now as far ar film schedules, I was under the impression from either this board, or maybe something on the DVD extras, that the Hawaii filming was the last scenes filmed.

I doubt HF would have got involved in rebashing or blocking a hat & a block would have been past the skills of a costume department too.

Yo
u can't get the Cairo look out of the box.
Agreed. It's turned for starters.

Shooting started in France, for the dock and sub pen scenes, then to England for all the soundstage shooting, THEN to Tunis and finally Hawaii.

I'm not sure about the filming schedules to be honest, maybe someone can set us straght.

There is not doubt in my mind that we don't have the whole truth about the Raiders hat. :)

Edit: Thanks Dakota!

No it doesn't. The Cairo hat is turned, which to my knowledge, that hat is not. Also, the dents that form the pinch on that hat are too large and the wrong shape for a Cairo hat. :junior: -IJ

Personally I think it looks a lot like the Well of the Souls hat. Well, what ever it looks like I like it. 8)

That is one tight ribbon. Check the way the light is hitting the hat. Print a picture of that hat and draw a line from the top of the crown to the brim on each side following the actual hat rather than the way the light makes it look. You may be surprised at what you get.

It looks like the ribbon area is tapered, but the rest of the crown is pretty straight. :?

That hat is really turned too. :)

I still maintain that it looks more like a Chachapoyan temple hat than a streets of Cairo hat. :junior: -IJ
