I got my IOAB bullwhip a few weeks ago, hopefully I will get around to developing the pictures this week (yeah, I know, get with the times and go digital :P ).

I was talking with BuffleHead about buying my first whip just the other day but was worried about the cost. I'm now looking into a IOAB whip. Guys please let me know how they crack. I'm a new GearHead and trying to learn things fast...well kinda fast. I'm taking it all in but not sure how much is staying in there :D

Greg;
In short -it cracks loud with little effort. I'm the owner of a first generation IOAB, though I do believe it is a bit heavier than Adam's new version.
Basically, no one can compete with such a quality whip to such a quality price I think.
And it's a great whip to learn with. Heck, even I could do it. ;)

Greg,

The Indy-on-a-budget bullwhip is made to crack. The IOAB whips that I'm making now taper from the end of the handle all the way to the point with a solid leather core so the whip carries well and cracks easily.

One of the most important thing in making a whip that cracks is having a good taper and weight distribution. Most of the cheaper whips out there are made without a taper using a rope core making them difficult to crack. While the IOAB whip is economical, it's still made to the high standards that I have for all of my work.

It's chrome-tanned cowhide that has been oiled at the factory.

Glad to see you made the connection, George. There's a LOT of folks on the board w/ IOABs...but we are too cool to make a list. 8)

Congratulations Jpenman - way to go!

My whip is so much fun - I wish I lived in the sticks so I could practice more with it.

Congrats to DavieM as well.

How does deerhide handle, and is it easy to work with?

Deerhide whips handle nice, but working with deerhide is not easy. I'd say it's harder than working with cowhide and kangaroo hide combined (probably worse than that, actually). So if you're thinking about making a whip, start with cowhide.
