Fedora with Shorts
What does everyone think of wearing their Fed. with shorts in the summer? I'm headed to Phoenix for a wedding and vacation next month and have been watching the temps soar lately out there to well over 100 degrees. I know I'll be wearing shorts most of the time, but I want to wear my fedora as well. How does it look? Is it ok with a t-shirt as well?
Thanks in advance.

I did it in Puerto Rico and got some grief for it. Mind you, it was 100+ degrees! Pictures may be found here. I admit that it is a bit of a Robin Higgins looks and perhaps a Pith Helmet might be more apropos, but it was hot, very hot, indeed!
Bottom line is wear your hat as much as possible!

Personally, I do not care for shorts anyways. Very rarely wear them. People tell you how much cooler it is than long pants and I will always disagree. Sure, it can be, but I find that having the sun beating directly on my legs on a very hot day is worse than wearing long pants. Kind of like how hair insulates the head from the sun rather than intensifying the heat. Plus, while hiking, short pants can really cause problems when the temerature changes, or when you encounter low lying bushes or a high lying tree root. Fall on one rock one time on your knee and you will know what I mean.
Another look I will never understand is sandals on guys. Especially with shorts and white socks.

I guess a fedora with shorts is ok, but personally, I don't care too much for it.. But then again, I don't care much for shorts. If I'm wearing shorts than I useally have a ballcap on. I usually only wear my fedora with a suit or while hiking. If I wore shorts hiking around here I would die of a combination of cut, poison ivy, poison oak, etc. There's underbrush in these mountains of a summer that make the jungle in Raider look like Kansas. (no joke!)

I have never been that much of a shorts person. I have always felt that I was pretty comfortable with a lightweight pair of long pants in the summer. Mostly, I have just worn jeans.
Having said that and considering that I am about to enter retirement, I have been considering wearing some cargo type shorts on the hottest of summer days. I am starting to consider comfort over looks. Of course, I haven't even thought about what a fedora would look like with shorts. Ummm...I don't know about that.

Man, I was loading up on this one Rick, but other minds beat me to it.
Chicken legs was to be part of the response.
I once worked with a guy on a job that refused to wear shorts, ever. I doubt if his wife ever saw his legs. I did once, by accident when he spilled laquer thinner all over his jeans. Course, he came out of them, and right away. Glad we were in a dwelling under construction. I understood right away why he never wore shorts, and slept in long johns, even in the summer months. When asked once why he never wore shorts, his stock reply was, " if I did, I could not work, due to haveing to beat the ladies off of me". Homer was his name, and hyperbole was his game. Fedora
Ditto. Lightweight pants do wonders. Besides, most of the sweating is done on your brow, and in your armpits. So I guess you could say its more important to wear a light hat (Montecristi anyone?) and either a T-shirt or light cotton shirt. :junior: -IJI have never been that much of a shorts person.
As much as I like my fedoras, I do not wear them with shorts. What I do wear, though, is my Akubra Banjo Paterson, which is "fedora looking" but
goes much better with shorts and other casual wear. When it is really hot and sunny I have an even wider brimmed Akubra for sun protection. I believe the Aussies wear their hats with most all kinds of clothing, as the hat is not just for looks but for protection from sun, rain and the elements.
In fact, some years ago, I was in Phoenix and did NOT have a wide brimmed hat. I burned my face and forehead so bad that I had blisters and redness
for YEARS! Also, the back of your neck and the top of your head (if you are like me and the forest is thinning) are just as important as your face.
If you are in Phoenix, who cares what you look like, take it from me, wear your hat. I have a brother-in-law in Phoenix who hikes quite a lot.
He wears either a fedora or an Aussie style hat all the time, and with shorts.

I'm with Rick on the shorts and the sandels (w/ socks) issue. I mostly wear my LL Bean pants in the summer. Latley I have been wearing shorts, not as much - mostly when I go down to the beach and when I go swimming. Swimming in pants slows you down . In any case, here in li'l Rhody (or anywhere in New England), the temperature always changes, so I'm always in pants...this coming from a guy who wears his Wested in August . I wear my Indy hat with everything. One summer I went to New Hampshire with some friends and I wore my "fed" with everything - even my bathing suit. My point is wear it, especially if it's an AB (I have got to get me one of those). Even if it's not, you still must have spent some big bucks on your fed (let's face it, feds aren't cheap), so wear it anytime you want. Besides, if you're going for the Cairo look, then you got to let it face the elements, lol. My advice: Wear with pride!

OT: You may have noticed that I refere to my "fed" as my "Indy hat" or put [fed] in " "; I bought it in Disney and the general concensus(sp) here at COW is that the Disney hat is not a true fedora . When I purchase an AB, only then will I "...have obtained the one true Ark."
(Sorry for the rants and long-winded speeches, I'm over my sugar intake limit )

Yes, I admit I own a pair of Birks, but I'm not a hippy. I wear them around the house (they're orthopedic, just like Aldens) and WITHOUT socks when I'm at the beach, but never with a suit. So BACK OFF!!!!!Hemingway Jones wrote:I believe that is how bink dresses. Hey, how about a kilt? I prefer a kilt to shorts any day, and I find the kilt to be more comfortable.

Actually, if I owned a nice set of kilts, the whole shebang, knife, etc, and a set of bagpipes, I would wear them around the house. I can hear my nosy neighbors now, "honey there goes Mr. Delk again, to get the mail, wearing those @##* kilts and trying to play those bagpipes!"

One would almost think that even if sandals and white socks were even remotely visually pleasant, socks would defeat the point of wearing sandals. Kind of like the guys who wear shorts over their sweatpants. I have done that but with underwear and pants. And whisky. But the lampshade on my head matched my underwear.

Yeah, nobody laughed at the Romans wearing "skirts," especially as they conquered the heck out of their enemies. Besides, it takes a strong man to wear a kilt. I mean, wouldn't YOU be afraid of a a bunch of guys in skirts running full tilt at you with seven foot broadswords? ...I thought so.ClintonHammond wrote: " how about a kilt?"
HA! The Irish gave the Scot the kilt hundres of years ago, and the Scot still hasn't got the joke...
Heh
Also, in its original form, the kilt was a very practical garment that would keep you very warm in the highlands. If you've ever worn a true kilt, you'll know how warm it is!

Fedora with shorts?! Absolutely!
The Commonwealth troops fought their way back and forth across North Africa (and back and forth and back and forth...) in bush hats and shorts during WWII. And looked cool as heck the entire time. If you're nervous about the fedora, just go a brim size larger and call it a bush hat!

Here's one where I am breaking all of the rules! T-shirt, shorts, bush hat, and *gasp!* flip-flops! Not quite birkenstocks, but I am in my backyard, after all.

I will agree with Mojave Jack on this one! It can be done, and with good taste, in the summer months.Mojave Jack wrote:The Commonwealth troops fought their way back and forth across North Africa (and back and forth and back and forth...) in bush hats and shorts during WWII. Shorts with retro styled headgear(which a fedora is) were being done for a long time and should continue when in the blazing sun.
Submitted for your approval...

No fedora's per se, but I see at least two 'slouch' type hats, a lot of bare heads and one dog!
What I am getting at is the idea that a fedora would be perfectly acceptable with shorts. Maybe you could skip the Greatful Dead shirt and Birkenstock's but a fedora with shorts in moderation seems o.k.
