The Hem of the Raiders Pants...

Post by Falstaff »

In a few weeks I should be getting a pair of Wested pants with an unfinished inseam. Obviously I'll have to hem the pants. Some time ago I remember reading a post in which someone mentions that the original Raiders pants Ford wore had a rather wide hem which made the pants drape more dramatically than normal pants. Given that the pants worn in Raiders seem to have a more baggy look then the other films, I think this observation might be right.

Can anyone else comment?

I did a search for the post, but found nothing.

Proper Indy pants need about a 4" hem so the speed-lacers of the Aldens don't get caught in the threads of the hem inside the pants.

In some pics, you can see the "hem-line" of the pant cuffs.

Ask away, Luisiana!:) The hem is where the pant legs are folded inwards and adjusted to fit the wearer's legs... the seam can be seen faintly on the outside of the pants, like on my Westeds (the lighter pair are hemmed way too low, btw):

I believe the term in Spanish would be los dobladillos de los pantalones(?)

Can we get a close-up on that hem seam, Scandinavia?! I haven't yet had my vintage trousers hemmed and that will help a lot.

My 1st gen Westeds - badly hemmed by stupid tailor who just didn't listen...

The 2nd gen pants - hemline about where I want it.

Trouser/pant leg turned inside out. Inside out, that is.

You are very welcome. 8)

Thank you very much, good sir!

You might want to REALLY EMPHASIZE that the last pic is the inside seam so no one makes a grievous error striving for authenticity while skimming the posts. ;)

Thread skimmers beware... as Mr. Sable so wisely pointed out, the last pic is indeed of THE INSIDE SEAM. Don't go zigzagging on the outside now, folks! That just won't be... screen-accurate.

I wish that for someone of my stature, the Wested pants came with a longer unfinished length. I knew how the pants should be hemmed, but I had to walk a line between having a hem that was as big as I wanted and having "high water" pants.

Especially considering the cost of the pants, I fretted over this a great deal. I guess that I am happy with it, considering what I had to work with. I just needed some more length and it would have made the job a whole lot easier.

The Indy pants do have a fairly wide hem. You can see it fairly well at a point during the beginning of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," when Indy is talking to Belloq in the jungle.

Does Wested hem them as high as they should be or do they hem them at the "common" lower height if you don't order them unfinished?
