Concieted Ape and JohnNdy got me interested in nylon whips with their comments in a prior post. With the winter on the way a nylon whip may be a good alternative to risking my roo whip in bad weather or not cracking at all. I went to the website the Ape man suggested and am impressed. While they don't look like IJ Morgans they do look sturdy and would keep me cracking all winter.

What do you think? How do they crack? They look like one would last forever, I welcome your comments.

I have one of these "Bernie" whips. It's a bullwhip, but not indy style. Bernie has been in the business for about 28 years. He's been delivering decent work for the past several years. He does make an "Indy" style bullwhip that a couple here have ordered. His picture and Indy style whip are posted over at the main Indygear whip page.
But I tell you, I am leaning towards a nylon as well. I sampled a few at the last WWAC convention. Their handling is quite impressive. The whip makers also have a real good reputation. And they are inexpensive enough to not break the bank. I would try the Rhett Kelly whip at:

Nylon whips are a great alternative to roo hide when the weather is bad. Rhett Kelly makes excellent nylon whips that are balanced well, crack well and are affordable. I just spoke to Rhett the other day about ordering a nylon bullwhip from him, and he did tell me that he is extremely backed up on orders. In fact, he is still getting orders done that were placed back in April, so if you are thinking of getting a nylon whip for this winter you may want to pick one up from Western Stage Props. But I would definitley sign up for one from Rhett if you can wait a while. I have one of his cow whips, and it's great.

Couldn't agree with you more, Sergei. Nylon whips do handle quite well. As far as the whip lasting a long time, I have owned one for a little over a year now, and it is still going strong. I have handled more nylon whips in the past year than any other whips. I have to say that they will last well in wet weather. Living in the Sunshine State (don't know how it got that name), I have done more than my fair share of cracking after it was raining.
I was able to find a local shop that sells any number of nylon whips, so I went down and did a little "research" last Sat. I tried out several of the stockwhips and bullwhips. At the risk of going against the Indy look, I actually would be inclined to tell you to get the stockwhip. Due mainly to the construction, the stockwhip is going to be more accurate. The whip will also be better for vollies, and other multiple cracks. Unfortunately, my opinions may be biased as the nylon whip I own is a stockwhip. As much as I love bullwhips, the nylon bullwhips I have handled just haven't quite felt right.
Come to think of it, though, I have yet to handle an un-waxed nylon bullwhip. The stiffness caused by the wax might have had something to do with the less than perfect handling. If you are considering a nylon bullwhip, then I would advise that you buy at least an eight-foot, if not a ten-footer. I tried a six-foot and about took my ear off. The nylon whip will be a little lighter than a leather whip, so the shorter whips will generally be lighter.
Well, I hope at least some of this helps. Just thought I'd pitch in my .02...

The website: http://www.em-brandwhips.com/
isn't working for me. Anyone else able to get it up and running. It wasn't working a few days ago either when I was trying to go to it.

That address is actually http://www.em-brand-whips.com
I was looking on there earlier, but I don't see anything about nylon whips. If anyone else finds them there let me know.
